Puzzled Pint is a casual, social puzzle solving event which happens at bars/pubs on the second Tuesday of every month in over seventy cities around the world. The Friday before each event, we post a location puzzle to this web site. The solution to that puzzle will lead to a local pub/bar/restaurant in each participating city. Hints will be available on the puzzledpint.com website, and you can also email us with questions.

On the night of the event, show up at the specified pub in your city (some cities may offer a choice; details including event start time will be posted on the locations page). We have more puzzles for you to solve while you enjoy drinks and food. Most teams take between 30 minutes and 2 hours to solve a typical puzzle set. "Game Control" will be on hand to give hints and verify answers.

Our Big Experiment

Puzzled Pint started as a small grassroots event in Portland, Oregon, USA. It has always been a labor of love, initially formed to bring puzzling to a town without the puzzle history of, say, the Bay Area or Boston. It turns out that the idea resonated with folks in many other cities, too. It is currently run in over 70 cities in over 12 countries around the world, with over 3000 players each month. We are still 100% volunteer run — the puzzle creators, editors, Game Control volunteers, everyone. We have recently registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Portland has a large number of Game Control (GC) volunteers, which helps spread printing costs around, but not all cities are so lucky. Printing costs come out of the pockets of the local GC. Every month, they're on the hook to both run the event and cover printing. Now that we're a nonprofit, we'd like to try an experiment. In an ideal world, that printing would be take care of. The local GC would only volunteer time, not money. We'd have a sustainable income that covers printing while keeping Puzzled Pint a free event to attend and play.

So here's the idea: Do you attend Puzzled Pint every month? Does it regularly give you an evening of fun and entertainment? Are you in a position where you can spare a few dollars a month? Then help us out by setting up a recurring donation to help cover the event.

How will this money be used? We have several ideas here, but they all depend on how much we receive in recurring donations. We would have no event without puzzle authors. Those authors work for free, for many hours a week, for several months, guided by editors and playtesters, to refine their initial puzzle ideas into finished products with the quality you've come to expect from a Puzzled Pint event. In each city running Puzzled Pint, we have wonderful volunteers who run the event by printing puzzle packets to distribute to players each month. Printing isn't free and the local GC either eat that cost or help cover it with tip jars. We're working on more equitable solutions to printing costs that can scale with the number of cities and players.

What about local GC that put out tip jars? We realize that some cities put out tip jars to help cover printing. We ask players to do what they feel comfortable doing. If you're already donating locally, and that feels best to you, please continue to do so. If you'd rather set up a monthly donation online, in a tax-deductible environment, then contribute here. Our hope is to grow our online donations enough that local cities don't have to put out tip jars (receive donated print services from local businesses).

I have an unanswered question. Whether you're a player or GC member, you can always contact us at [email protected] with questions and comments.
