About

Radio Survivor editors Jennifer Waits, Matthew Lasar, Eric Klein and Paul Riismandel–along with more than a dozen contributors–have been documenting and reporting on the future of community media since 2009.

We focus on the kind of radio, podcasting and media rarely covered in-depth by the broadcast industry or mainstream press, from community radio, college radio and low-power FM to independent podcasting, public access TV and independent film. We also dig deep to get at the policy and economic issues that most affect these media, while exploring and documenting important history.

We believe that community radio and media are vibrant media platforms, that continue to thrive and innovate despite dire predictions. We are the only outlet that dedicates a weekly feature to college radio, where radio's new generations are innovating the future. Editor Jennifer Waits has created the largest online documentation of college and community radio stations, comprising more than 150 radio station tours.

Our weekly podcast and radio show is the only one weekly program dedicated to documenting and supporting community media. It is now heard on two dozen non-commercial terrestrial and online stations around the world.

Support from our patrons allows us to create this unparalleled documentation and support of community media every single week of the year.

What We Use Your Funding For:
  • Web and podcast hosting
  • Equipment and costs associated with producing our podcast and radio show
  • Subsidizing travel for radio station tours and attending conferences
What We Want To Do More Of:
  • Post accurate transcriptions of our podcast to make them more accessible
  • In-depth explorations of community media history and stories, like: the history of low-power FM (LPFM); the impact of media ownership on democratic communication; and highlighting the diversity of voices and people making community media today.
  • Report on more community media events and conferences happening around North America
  • More tours of radio stations, especially in places farther away from major metroplexes

That's why we're asking members of the Radio Survivor community to become Patrons to help fund our work, in the same community-supported spirit of great community media. After nearly a decade of publication we've demonstrated our dedication and reliability. Now we want to ensure the next decade, and beyond, with your help.

Every monthly dollar you contribute gets us closer to a milestone that makes Radio Survivor sustainable, and then helps to grow the scope and depth of our coverage. As a Patron you have the opportunity to help decide topics and issues we cover, and receive rewards, as listed below.

We hope you'll choose to support Radio Survivor so that we can continue to support great radio.

Thanks,

Jennifer, Matthew, Eric and Paul
Goals
55 of 100 patrons
Help us document the history of Indymedia, Micropower Radio and LPFM.
Nov. 30, 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the birth of Indymedia at the 'Battle of Seattle.' This event and movement brought together community media activists and a revolution in open publishing on the internet, years before the birth of social media. It also marks the tipping point, when pressure from community radio activists and a civil disobedience micropower radio movement motivated the FCC to create low-power FM, launching the biggest ever expansion of community radio.

Although we did not reach our original goal of 100 patrons by Aug. 1, 2019, we're still committed to doing this work when we reach this benchmark. Even though the anniversary may pass first, we still want to document this important history.
