About Responsible Hedonist

Hey there!

Welcome to our Patreon. We're stoked to have you here!
We know you've got questions so let's crack into it.

Who are we?
We're Diana and Frank, two nerds who somehow found our way to the wine industry. Together, we have over 15 years of experience and a bunch of certifications. We both worked as sommeliers in Chicago at James Beard award winning and Michelin starred restaurants. In 2017, we moved to Aotearoa New Zealand, so Diana could pursue her Master’s in Wine Science. We never left.

Over time, we began to realize that something was seriously wrong in the wine industry. Wine was super interesting, but most people talking about it were boring and, shall we say, a bit snobby about it all?

And that just ain’t us….

So, we created Responsible Hedonist to make some tasty wine, answer your wine questions (yes even that one), and of course, have some fun along the way.

Why Support?
We’re starting a wine company from scratch (!!!). We’ve got a lot of heart, a ton of knowledge, and the right mix of passion and insanity to pull this off. What we haven’t got is a lot of investors (zero currently), money, or a family legacy behind us. Since we're starting Responsible Hedonist without any assets, trust funds, or lotto money, your support will directly help this venture.

Seeing how difficult it’s been for us to get the ball rolling, we had this crazy idea of documenting and sharing our experience with people. That way, if they had a similar dream, they could get some ideas of how to get started and learn from our journey.

We’ll post some of what we’re up to on Instagram, but Patreon is where we'll share what’s going on behind the scenes. Content will range from business updates to wine basics and everything in between. Think of it like a mashup of wine and business 101 as seen by a reality TV confessional. Patrons will be able to submit content requests and questions, so don't be shy!

What is Responsible Hedonism?
Responsible Hedonism is about enjoying things and having a good time, but not at the expense of what’s important. In our personal lives, that means occasionally mixing up low-ABV cocktails and figuring out ways to lower our carbon footprint. We wanted to create a wine company that embraces this philosophy – one that’s dedicated to responsibly making tasty, fun-loving wines. This means incorporating sustainable practices into all areas of wine production, doing what we can to lessen our environmental impact, and being fully transparent so we can be accountable to our community.

What Do We Do Outside of Responsible Hedonist?
Diana is an assistant winemaker, and Frank is working on eradicating non-native species in the native forests of Waiheke Island to promote biodiversity (his first love was environmental science).
