Rhian E. Jones is creating hidden histories and political pop culture

Among other ways of paying the bills, I'm a writer. So far I've written a revisionist history of 90s politics and pop culture and how they combined to marginalise working-class voices and make everything more posh, more conservative and more boring; another book on an early Victorian social uprising in rural Wales featuring farmers in petticoats; and a co-authored book on history, politics, post-industrial teenage angst, class war and the Manic Street Preachers. I also put together an anthology of women's music writing exploring our complicated relationship with problematic art. I write for New Socialist, Tribune and New Humanist among other places. My writing focuses on digging up bits of history and culture that have been overlooked, erased or forgotten and generally documenting our slide towards late-stage capitalism's endgame. In this age of unapologetically controversial opinions, I regard cider and black as a cocktail, leopardprint as a neutral, and the first Libertines album as good.

The broad themes of my writing are the political aspects of pop culture and the historical aspects of politics, but within that my interests manage to be both eclectic and niche: working-class history and identity, Wales, nineteenth-century radical political movements, riots and uprisings, Les Mis, intersections of gender and class, the Long 1990s, London, Labour Party history, left groupuscules, good pubs, Raymond Williams, Colette, Bob Dylan, bad puns. I'm likely to write about any and all of these. At the moment I'm also working more seriously on writing fiction, including the projects mentioned here, and trying to think of ways to bring the country's working-class history to page, stage or screen.

I find it much easier to write if I know I'm writing for people who want to read it, so if you enjoy what I come up with and would be interested in reading more in-depth, detailed and direct dispatches on a more regular basis, please subscribe and let me know. And if there's other specific content you'd be interested in, let me know that too!

  • Look, I don't expect anyone to offer this amount, so I'll confidently say that fifty quid is roughly what it costs me to get drunk enough to think that showing my face on video is a good idea: so possibly dramatic reenactment of climactic moments in radical history, or class war themed ASMR or something, I don't know, let's talk.
