About Ribbon Candy Hooking

Remember those beautiful boxes of ribbon candy you find in old fashioned candy shops around the holidays? Those perfectly accordioned loops are just what your loops look like when you hook rugs. While all handcrafts are currently making a comeback on the scale of a small renaissance, hooking really stands out. Rug hooking is a distinctly North American craft; something we can research and measure and record and claim as our own. Whether harking back to the population of fishermen’s wives hooking with donated piles of debutantes’ old hosiery in Labrador, or remembering the women of Waldoboro Maine who began to clip and shape their tufted masterpieces with soft pom-pom perfection, or the man, the tin peddler, who would watch his wife, by candlelight or rush light, struggling with hooking tools, and begin hammering out sets of stencil designs and producing the world’s first commercial designs; Rug hooking has already had a beautiful and whimsical history.
With these quiet days of life suddenly slowed down beyond our control, both men and women are returning to quiet pursuits. Rug hooking has seen an enormous increase in interest; people coming to the craft for the first time are realizing the unlimited creative potential in creating rugs. A craft that requires very little set-up and very little skill is one that only requires a little guidance and inspiration.
With my channel, website, and social media pages, I try to give hookers and punchers both the instruction they need and the encouragement. For beginners and seasoned veterans alike, I record informational videos and creature designs and supplies to teach, challenge, and entertain. I work on quality content non-stop, in an effort to develop my business and draw new people to the craft.
In my mind, creating a supportive, informational community is essential to supporting the craft. I spend a lot of time fulfilling orders and doing the monkey business that pays the bills, but more time creating content and inspiring ideas and projects that I put out freely on all my public outlets. Ribbon Candy Hooking has become busy! I want to continue to provide ideas, instruction and a platform for everyone to improve technically and grow artistically, and so the question becomes: will you be part of the revival of this old craft?
