About Roz Interim

Hi I’m Roz Stendahl. I’m a graphic designer, illustrator, and book binder. I have been teaching visual journaling, drawing, design, and other art classes for 30 years.

If you’re here you probably know me from my blog Roz Wound Up. There I have written for 13 years about my many enthusiasms including drawing practice, creativity, visual journaling, book binding, bicycling, film, to name just a few…

Two cataract surgeries early in 2019 resulted in vision changes which limit my ability to continue to shoot and edit the hours of detailed videos that form the basis of my online classes.

Since childhood I’ve focused on my own creative process, so in response to this vision change I continued to do focus on that process. I sat down to sketch without corrected vision, adapting to several surgery side effects as I worked out a new drawing practice for myself. To keep myself sketching I began taping my studio drawing, painting, and mixed media sessions so that I could look at and analyze changes to my sketching process.

I realized these videos could be a way for me to stay in touch with students and Roz Wound Up readers who are interested in drawing and the creative process, so I started this subscription blog.

This has proved a great way for me to continue teaching while spending less time editing video.

Each month I post a new sketching video.

It might be a pen and ink sketch; it might be watercolor, gouache, acrylic, or mixed media. Often a piece will contain collage.

These real-time videos (typically running 20 to 90 minutes). (You can speed up the real-time video to watch in less time if that suits you.)

There are additional posts on process and creativity every month. Check out the Tier levels to see what you'll have access to at each subscription level.

I've also created color theory chats and project chats which are individual series that look at a particular topic in greater depth. Depending on your tier level you'll have access to some or all (Tier Three) of these posts as well.

Most of my written posts contain exercise suggestions that will help you master the concept discussed in the post, and build your skill levels.

You can view a real-time video a sketch video in this public post.

And here you can view one of the blog posts discussing Prussian Blue (used in the first sketch posted on the blog). It contains projects or exercises for readers.

Tier Three will include access to a live monthly webinar where you can ask me questions about materials and methods. It will be as if we were sitting down to have a chat.

Tier Three subscribers also have access to a private Facebook group where they can post their work for discussion.

Content on this subscription blog will be exclusive to this blog for at least six months; however I currently have no plans to use this material elsewhere.

I'm looking forward to sharing my process videos with you and showing you what I am up to.

I hope our discussions help you bring more creative voice into your life.

I understand if a subscription blog isn't your thing. In that case I hope that you will continue to follow me on Roz Wound Up. I'll still be posting there.

Note: as of December 2021 I have closed Tier One. That was the basic subscription rate. The limited benefits were a speed version of the demo and one creativity post. I discontinued this tier because I found it required too much video editing time to create the speed version. The process stripped out the audio and callouts. To retain usefulness for that speed video I had to write a descriptive blog post explaining all that had been omitted. I was spending more time trying to fix something that wasn't really broken to begin with. By retiring Tier One I've freed up time for discussing the concepts in the real-time videos, or additional topics that catch my attention, in the creativity posts for Tiers Two and Three. It think going forward this ensure an even richer experience for the continuing subscribers. (Everyone subscribing at Tiers Two and Three will be able to watch all the original speed videos from the first two years, but I won't be generating speed videos after December 2021.)
