Hello and welcome fellow misifit!

Please read on for an introduction to me, what I create, and why I'm looking for your help.

About Me

My name is Sarah, and I'm a Philadelphia-based cat-lady writer of children's, young adult, and "adult" fiction and poetry. I am an award-winning painter who also dabbles in sketching and digital illustration. Books are my life, and I blog about books (and occasionally food!) and write about the bookish life for Book Riot, Electric Literature, and PsychCentral and was previously a book reviewer and editor at Kirkus Reviews. I’m currently a freelance writer/editor/virtual author assistant and MFA student in the Writing for Children and Young Adults program at Vermont College of Fine Arts. I’m a non-practicing librarian and hold a Master’s in Library Science.

Meet my cats...

In this collage, you'll see Jon Snow (the little mischief maker in the cover image of my Patreon) and Minerva.

I am an artist living with a chronic mental illness (bipolar disorder) and am on the autism spectrum. My experience living as a differently abled creator impacts the stories I tell in my fiction, poetry, and journalism, and I seek to bring visibility of neurodiverse, differently abled, and other often overlooked and margenalized identities in my work. I choose to live and write transparently about my illness in hopes that it can help other people.

I also share my art, document the bipolar experience visually, and promote other mental illness awareness efforts on Instagram, like in this Med Mosaic:

My watercolor painting ("Stardust Memories") using the powder from Lithium capsules I swirled in the paint:

Some of my writing about this includes:

A Book Riot interview with Ellen Forney, author of Marbles and Rock Steady

My Book Riot article about "How My Mental Illness Affects My Reading Life, and Vice Versa."

My Electric Literature article about how we curate our lives online so others think we're doing fine when really, mental illness and other challenges make the day-to-day life unbearable

And my blog post about how mental illness can interfere with reading, with tips for bipolar readers.

The Nerd Takeover: Why I Write for Weirdos

In a larger sense, I write for any weirdo, misfit, goth kid, nerd, or anyone who feels like they live on the margins. People who just feel “different.” I sing your hopes, fears, interests, joy, and pain in my writing. I think we make up a big family, like an epic lunch table in the quirkiest, (possibly haunted) abandoned mansion stuffed with strange old portraits and stacked floor to ceiling with books, cats, and forbidden passageways. I’m all for a nerd takeover.

Why I Need Your Help

Here’s the deal: living with a chronic illness and being a creative can often be at odds. I have enormous medical costs each month: specifically, $550 for psychiatry, therapy, and medicine combined. I’m finding that most days, I have to choose more work that lets me afford psych costs in the short term, but ultimately pushes me back in writing creatively because I don’t have enough time and energy for both. What I’m looking for most is to fund that $550 in recurring medical costs, which would let me spend more time on creative projects.. Beyond that first goal, I’d love to be able to have steady funds for one or two days a week to take off from freelancing and work just on creative pursuits.

I want this this page to be a place for exclusive writing, art, recipes and illustration (and cat photos!) for people who support my mission to reach and support others who have similar challenges, educate on living with a disability, and celebrate the beautiful weirdness.

Here's What I'm Working on Right Now

There are a couple of projects I am working on right now that Patreon support could really help me get off the ground:

  • “The Mad Book” - A memoir about being a bipolar artist. I’m about 30-40% done with this and would love to finish it this summer. I intend to release excerpts here.
  • "The Lexlog and Other Logic-Free Lyrics" - A collection of surreal and avant-garde children's poetry, in the manner of Edward Gorey and Shel Silverstein. I'd love to publish some of these poems right here on the Patreon page before I compile them, hopefully at the end of the year.
  • The Epic Link Between Boom and Blink: A children's book I am writing and illustrating about the adventures of two cats, one of whom is deaf and the other one lives with trauma. I'm exploring how two differently abled characters can bond and help each other. Through Patreon support, I could add a chapter and illustration to this book each week (it's about 20% done right now) and update on the official Instagram. Check out one of my illustrations below!

  • Broke by Books blog - This is my book blog I've been running for more than 4 years. The guiding mission is to "Spread a contagious love for reading through helpful, thought provoking, and enjoyable writing about books. Please join me in growing an inspired, engaged, and fearless reading life." I also mentor other book bloggers through this site. With the help of Patreon, I'd be able to afford the time and energy to post on Broke by Books weekly.
  • Reaching new readers with my writing about mental illness - One of the best ways to help others understand the experience of living with a mental illness and disability is through writing personal essays, doing interviews, and creating articles about it for websites and periodicals. I really wish I had more time to pitch article ideas and write for new spaces so I could spread the word, but my schedule doesn't allow it right now. With the help of patrons, I could add an hour each week to doing just that.

These are a few of the projects I know support from Patreon would really help me work on.

Thank you for taking the time to read my page and for your support!
