To feel fully at home in nature is our children's birthright

The Secret Garden Outdoor Nursery has been changing the way in which children experience education in their early years, since it opened as Scotland’s first ever outdoor nursery over 10 years ago. Today, the value of outdoor learning in early years is being embraced within the mainstream education system, and now we see the potential for informing that emerging landscape, by sharing our pioneering philosophy and practice, crafted around our guiding principles – Presence, Nature, Play.
Our intention is to inspire others to use the same foundational elements in their work with children, so that every child has the same opportunity to learn and grow in the outdoors, with ‘nature as teacher’ and with the parents and practitioners learning and growing alongside.

The Secret Garden is a place where children can explore and play, fully immersed in the natural world for 49 weeks of the year, in 25 acres of woodland. By learning to be comfortable in all weathers, our practitioners develop a strong, stable presence, which provides children with the confidence they need to explore their own resilience and sense of belonging outside. Children can extend their own curiosity, learning about the world and about themselves through play in the woods, whilst practitioners provide a calm, safe space for exploration and learning.
Sadly, our founder, Cathy Bache passed away in July of 2017, with many of her ideas yet to be realised. Cathy worked tirelessly towards her vision of making the Secret Garden experience available to all, and we are dedicated to bringing that dream into reality.

Casting the seeds widely
Our goal now is to spread our message further and wider than ever before. Cathy was passionate about children having space and freedom to play in nature. She believed that adult practitioners best serve children by being present and aware, by communicating thoughtfully and respectfully, and by themselves being fully at home and alive in nature. Cathy believed that the Secret Garden was more than “just” a nursery. She believed it was a community, a way of being and of thinking, standing for something precious and endangered in our rapidly changing world – a response to the increasing complexity of our times, to the resulting erosion of childhood, of childhood play and of our children’s deep and vital sense of belonging in the natural world.

We can’t do this by ourselves, we need financial support to develop and launch a training programme that offers depth and is accessible to those who would take most from it, regardless of their financial means, so that the seeds of our practice can be taken and sown across the UK and beyond, to grow into beautiful offerings for children in nature – each unique to itself, but all with the foundations of mindful presence, deep nature connectedness and a rich understanding of children’s play.
This task is not small but we believe, with regular monthly support from people who share our vision for a different world, we can make it happen. If you become a Patron, for even the smallest amount you can really help us build strong foundations to help take Cathy's ambitions forwards.

Heartfelt thanks,
The SG Team
