Kia Ora whanau,

It's time to tell a new story, one which can hold space for the uncomfortable places we are starting to find ourselves in, as we shift our perspectives towards those of regeneration and circular systems.

I have been working to create that new story for the past 8 years using the container of Senorita AweSUMO to tell a narrative around zero waste textile practices and creating a holistic fashion system. This container held me for 10 years on my wellness journey and now is the time to take it to a new level of practice, sharing stories and skills to help us all adapt to a new way of living on earth in light of the climate emergency we are facing. There are many actions we can take as individuals, but how much of an impact does that really have on the collective system we need to shift?

"Business as usual" is running out of time to adapt for the future challenges, I want to collaborate on that shift and assist those who are ready to work together on that journey.

Connected community networks are a big part of that process and whilst I still want to have a creative practice, using my skills to help others is a big priority for me. Over the last 10 years I have participated and facilitated workshops around zero waste and sustainability. I have gained many insights from furthering my own learning in transformational practices. Some of the frameworks I have looked into from local and global sources are Theory U, LENSES and Charles Eisenstein's work, to name a few.

It is my hope to assist my local community in building a resilient future and that starts here with your support.

My Journey to date:

I am Fiona Clements. Pakeha, Ngai Tahu, Ngati Mamoe, Waitaha, Clan Gordon, Craftivist, Activist and Zerowaste Practitioner.

I grew up in Waitati, Dunedin, New Zealand. Connected closely with nature and environmentally minded, my beliefs are reflected through my textile design and zero waste solutions.

Senorita AweSUMO is my response to workplace related harm. In 2008 I became very ill from solvent use in my job as a sign writer. I had been working in this job for 5 years before the "realm of headachia"  hit, This lasted for years after I was fired (best day of my life) from this job. This was when Senorita AweSUMO came into being and helped me re-examine my own beliefs and experience, taking myself and Senorita AweSUMO into a new phase of life, growing a holistic lifestyle, nurturing and nourishing the whole.

I also have a Hereditary Nerve condition called HNPP - Hereditary Neuropathy with susceptibility to Pressure Palsies. This was passed to me through my mother's line, it is a rare condition with no help currently available to heal it. Over the past 10 years I have worked hard to learn more about this condition and heal myself of these issues. I am currently in the best shape I have ever been and the future looks so exciting. This condition means that I have the deletion of the PMP22 gene, this results in the myelin sheath around my nerves not regenerating itself when it is damaged. I can suffer from long term numbness, nerve pain and fatigue, I have learnt to adjust my way of living to incorporate wellness in my daily routine that keeps me well and whole. One reason I need support to keep my creative work in progress.

I believe that designers can serve their community by providing solutions to problems. Witnessing the amount of waste created in commercial fashion production, in 2012 I set about creating a solution. An opportunity to create unique garments and provide a local solution to a problem facing the fashion system globally. Reducing waste without compromising style. My textile designs aim to mitigate environmental harm from modern fashion production. Up cycled garments minimise impact to the environment from disposable consumer items. Utilising a textile resource recovered from landfill, commercial off cuts, and recycling centres, adding value to otherwise discarded materials. Only purchasing ethical fabrics and being transparent about where and how they get to me. Using zero waste pattern making techniques to incorporate real understanding of how we can still create clothing without the need to create waste in the process, Designing the waste out before it becomes a wasted resource.

Senorita AweSUMO is a zerowaste lifestyle brand for ethical and conscious consumers.

Encouraging conscious consumption by spreading awareness and giving an environmental choice.

Global problem, Local solution.

Over the past 10 years this zero waste process has lead to many other projects, in 2015 I founded a Non-Profit called Just Atelier Trust now operating under the name Stitch Kitchen, Ingredients for Creative Living http://www.stitchkitchen.nz/ We operate a community sewing room in Dunedin, NZ to reduce textile waste to landfill and educate our community on ways to reduce their carbon footprint. We run workshops, community outreach, mending sessions and opportunities to network with like minded individuals and organisations to reduce textile waste in creative and innovative ways. I volunteer as the Social Media Manager for this venture, we are open 2 days a week, Thursdays and Fridays at 88 Vogel St, Dunedin 10am - 3pm, Check out our InstagramFacebookTwitter for updates. We have a new waste minimization project starting soon, the 4KT Elephants Project.

I have also recently taken on the role of Chair for the Sustainable Dunedin City Incorporated society, with charitable status. It began in 2007 with a vision of facilitating a positive, secure and sustainable future for Dunedin City in the face of challenges posed by climate change and unsustainable resource use.

This is what I need to earn monthly to keep my studio operating. This covers my studio rent, Public Liability insurance, internet, cell phone, petrol, and my health insurance. I need to cover my basics to keep this space going, so that I am independent and able to keep being creative and doing the community volunteer work I do on a regular basis.
