About Shagpoke Studios

Welcome! Thank you for your interest in my work. My name is Krystal, though most of you know me as Shagpoke, and I am the sole proprietor of Shagpoke Studios. Shagpoke is a colloquial term for a Great Blue Heron, in case you were wondering!

As of June 2019 I've been on patreon for about a year and a half and it's been an amazing journey. I'm truly touched by the supportive group that has gathered around me. We've created a really amazing chat group on telegram, created new friendships, got together at conventions, and inspired each other. I love having people who support my work and encourage me, and it's great to have feedback on my potential costume designs as well as merch ideas!

My journey started with a university program for costuming (which thanks to my patrons I was finally able to pay off my student loans in May 2019!). After completing that I then worked in the film and theatre industry for a couple of years. While it definitely had its perks, the film industry was full of 14+ hour days, stressful working environments, and overall a lack of appreciation and creative growth.  After deciding that film wasn't for me, I then spent some time working for dance studios but I missed making those cool creature costumes that I used to make for film.  I decided to start a small side business online for the slow season. I fell in love with the creative freedom found in the fandom and decided to make a fulltime business out of Shagpoke Studios. And now over six years later I'm still loving it!

As much as I love what I do, it isn't always easy. I need to find time to answer emails, send invoices, update social media, maintain my etsy shop, create photo collages, research and order materials, send quotes, package and ship out items... and that is all outside of any time spent actually creating costumes!  Thanks to my patrons in the last year and a bit I've finally found the time to nearly be ready to finally launch a website with built in shop, I made myself my first ever costume, and I've invested in some new equipment such as a small 3d printer which have really helped! And most importantly I've been able to concentrate primarily on large projects like partials and fullsuits, which has been much more rewarding than small parts order all the time and I've improved greatly!

With your support on Patreon, not only will I have the opportunities to try new things and grow as a creator, but we'll also get to create a community. I can find out what things you want to see from me, through polls and discussions of concepts I have. You'll be able to help shape the direction that my business goes in! In return I hope you'll be inspired by my creations, and you'll also learn from my years of experience and education with WIPs and discussions.

In the coming months I hope to continue improving my work and expanding my skills. I'm going to try training a part time worker to do some of the simpler tasks like tracing patterns and cutting fur which will hopefully speed up my production! I've been overwhelmed by the interest I've received in my work, so hopefully I can work out a way to make costumes a bit faster while keeping up the same standard of quality.

Thanks so much for reading and for considering supporting me on patreon, it really means a lot!

With $300 per month I would be able to finally invest in some bigger things for my studio. A degassing chamber for casting is something I'd really love to have, as well as getting into 3D printing. I would also like to buy a better camera to take photos of my finished work with, as I currently just use my cell phone camera.
