In 1970 three young men in Spartanburg, South Carolina, created music that was steeped in the past but years ahead of its time. Walter Hyatt, Deschamps "Champ" Hood, and David Ball wove vocal and musical harmonies through original and cover songs in one of the first incarnations of a sound that would later be called "Americana".

Uncle Walt's Band moved to Nashville and then Austin in pursuit of record deals that never came, but they influenced musicians and songwriters who would go on to become stars, including Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, and Junior Brown. Legendary songwriter Townes Van Zandt once said Uncle Walt's Band was one of his favorite bands, and the great Jimmie Dale Gilmore has said, "Walter and David and Champ made what to me is perfect music".

Though Uncle Walt's Band never achieved commercial success, their music lives on. In 2018 two of their songs appeared in the hit HBO series Silicon Valley and Omnivore Records released an anthology album, marking the first time their music was available to the general public in more than two decades.

Junto Media is honored to be preserving the life and legacy of this acclaimed group. We hope you'll join us on this journey, which will take us from Spartanburg to Nashville to Austin and beyond, to tell the story of a legendary group few people have heard, but none who have will ever forget.
