About Sims Library of Poetry

The Sims Library of Poetry is an outgrowth of the Community Literature Initiative (CLI), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting writers of color and those from underserved communities. The CLI, through its Publishing Classes, relationship with World Stage Press, and the Sims Library of Poetry, offers rich opportunities for writers from all backgrounds to share their voices.

The Sims Library of Poetry began when Hiram Sims, a professor, poet and lifelong resident of South Central Los Angeles, started lending books to students in his poetry classes. As readers of Sims’ initial suitcase library increased in number and demand, Sims began to expand his poetry collection.

The Sims Library of Poetry found its first more permanent home in Sims’ garage, with a collection of about 3,000 books. Poetry open-mics and other events were held in the Sims backyard as a community began to establish itself around the growing library.

In the Summer of 2020, we found a permanent home for our library in Inglewood! Since then, we've been transforming the location into a poetry-friendly space. We now have 5,000 books (and counting!).

The poetry community is a treasured, diverse and active part of the L.A. area. Still, rapid gentrification and a lack of long-term spaces to support connection and creation has kept the city’s poetry community in a transitory state. The Sims Library of Poetry, with its new permanent location, hopes to serve as a central hub for the poetry of local and international communities alike.

The Sims Library of Poetry envisions a future role as a library in service of local and nationwide poets, celebrating the home-grown voices and narratives of South L.A. and fostering shared experiences across the world through performances, readings, and the distribution of its ever-expanding collection of in-house and international titles.

Our Patreon community helps us cover monthly costs associated with running the Sims Library. We are currently preparing the library to open to the public, and are also focused on building and supporting the poetry community in L.A. and beyond throughout the duration of COVID. We utilize Patreon funds to support acquisitions of new poetry collections, repairing damaged materials, adding murals and other welcoming touches to the library space, as well as many other similar projects.

The 44 Campaign will specifically help us hire more library employees (we only have two at the moment), expand our Black and Latinx poetry collection, and renovate our library space to add a reading room/office. Beyond this, we'll also be able to create more events and expand our reach, helping improve literacy in our community and beyond while creating a beautiful space to celebrate poetry!
Goals
$496.87 of $2,500 per month
Meeting this goal allows the Sims Library to cover monthly operating costs, allowing the Library to open to the public as quickly as possible, as well as develop online and in-person poetry programs.
