Music theory is SO much fun!

And there are SO MANY amazing music theory resources and communities on social media... SO many YouTube channels, SO many podcasts, SO many blogs, SO many Pinterest boards... which can completely transform how people learn and teach music theory... but most people don’t seem to know these even exist.

While individual projects may have their followings, the enormous breadth and depth of music theory on social media seems largely unknown to teachers, students, and performers.

So here’s what I’m doing to change that:

My free PDF, The Ultimate Guide to Music Theory on Social Media, describes almost 100 of my favorite music theory podcasts, blogs, YouTube channels, Facebook groups, Twitter feeds, Instagram pages, and Pinterest boards. I'm currently writing the 2nd edition, which adds even more!

My weekly inspiration e-mails feature individual resources and explore what makes them so uniquely valuable.

- On  Facebook and Twitter, I signal-boost individual resources and opportunities, engage in music theory discussions with other creators and fans, and share some of my own thoughts on music theory and social media.

My Facebook group for people who create music theory resources on social media provides a forum for discussion and support, helping people to create even more amazing resources.

Online music theory can totally transform how people teach, learn, and engage with music theory. That’s why I’m spending my summer reaching out to as many music teachers, organizations, school boards, and homeschool co-ops as I can, to give them my guidebook and help them figure out how to use it with their teaching.

How can you help?

- Subscribe here on Patreon, for as little as $1/month! Your monthly donations will enable me to spend more time on this project. They'll show the world that music theory matters, and will give you a way to personally invest in making things happen. You'll also get some cool benefits and services as listed in the descriptions to each subscription level.

- Share my work with your students, teachers, friends, and colleagues! My guidebook is 100% free, because I want it to help as many people as possible. (If you want access to the guidebook, but don't want to join my e-mail list, just let me know and I'll send you a direct link -- I really want you to have this!)

- Join our communities on Facebook, Twitter, and Patreon! Seriously! I'm just one person. You're the ones who make this a real community, and I literally could not do it without you.

- Send me feedback, advice, requests, complaints, words of support! I'm not in this for the money (though I do need the money, because otherwise I won't be able to make this the full-time job I envision). I want to help people, so I need to know what's working and what's not. I'm so grateful for your help in this!

Cool, how does Patreon work?

For a monthly subscription, you get access to my Patron-only discussion board and a host of special benefits and services. This is a place for you to connect with me and other patrons on a more intimate level than Facebook/Twitter. I'll also be posting "fly-on-the-wall" videos of my composing and improvising, and occasional updates about my personal and professional life, which are visible only to paid subscribers.

When you make your monthly pledge, you'll be charged for the first month immediately, and then on the first day of each ensuing month that you maintain your subscription. (This is slightly different from the usual process, whereby new subscribers are not charged until the beginning of the next month. I'm testing out a beta feature that charges new patrons right away, in order to protect myself against "sampler" abuse and to get you your benefits faster. Read more here.)

You can cancel your subscription at any time.

Awesome, but... who are you??

Hi, I'm Sam! I'm a music scholar, composer, and pianist based in Providence, RI. I'm also a PhD student in historical musicology at New York University, set to defend my dissertation in March 2019. I've taught music theory at both NYU and Brown, and am thrilled to take my teaching online with Social Media Music Theory.

Aside from music, I love Euro-style board games, fantasy books and movies, learning random languages, playing with my toddler, and nerding out with friends and family.

Amazing! Sign me up!

Goals
9 of 25 patrons
If we can reach 25 patrons, I'll launch my first video series!

Every beginning is difficult. No matter how confident, how excited one may be about their brand-new project, there's always that nagging fear: what if?

What if I'm wrong?

What if my work isn't as valuable as I thought?

What if I pour my heart and soul into this, but nobody even sees it?

What if... I can't even continue with this project, because I have to find another job to pay the bills?

My friends, let's take this opening leap together! You're here because you see something valuable in Social Media Music Theory. You're here because you want this to succeed.

25 patrons may not seem like a lot, but it's the world to someone who's just starting out.

Because that's exactly what it is: the start. And you're making it happen!
