About the current project: 100 Crows

I first conceived this project on Kickstarter in January 2019 (See bit.ly/100Crows if you haven’t already to see the project page there!) as part of the Make/100 feature they run each year.

The summary of the project:

Experience the combination of an age old art medium, encaustic wax, and the latest technologies, blockchain and NFC. This project continues my love affair with encaustic wax, a medium which produces works of unparalleled permanence and beauty. The amazing diversity of this art medium allows techniques from a vast number of other art forms to be used to craft truly unique works of art.

I am primarily working with image transfer, impression, and inclusion here; just some of the myriad ways to work with encaustic.

The technology side to these works demonstrates a solution to one of the art world's oldest problems: authenticity and provenance. With the digital certificate of authenticity attached to each painting, connecting it to all of its provenance information stored via blockchain, these records become a permanent part of the painting.

Bringing these things together for this project is connecting the physical to the digital. It is also making the digital physical - something that you can see and hold and use.

Above are initial test pieces I did as mock ups for the project.

Each of these paintings will give you first hand experience of the beauty of encaustic painting, the application of blockchain technology to solve a real problem, and the confidence of a permanently secure encrypted certificate of authenticity.

About me:

My life has always been composed of parts, loosely held together (or not) simply by being things I was interested in. Then Crow appeared. The Trickster, and for me, unifying force. Pulling  puzzle pieces together.

As more and more pieces begin to fit together, I am building up a picture of what might be possible – in my life & in the world. The merging of art and technology, in a new and unique way, is the latest experiment with creating things of interest and value.

I strongly believe that artists are ground breakers —disruptors—creating the future through exploring the possibilities of now. Envisioning better ways to live is what we do; it is what artists throughout the ages have always done. Both on a personal basis and on a community, society, or global scale, it is the artist who challenges the status quo, who is able to imagine and bring to life a vision of the future for themselves and others.

"Artists to my mind are the real architects of change, and not the political legislators who implement change after the fact." William S. Burroughs

As artists, it is our job to respond to society and the world we live in, take inspiration from it, and use it as the raw materials of our creations. It is our job to hold a mirror up to that society: show its beauty, its ugliness, its pain, and it's joy. It is also our job to show what we - as a society - might be. What we can be. What is possible.

Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” - Howard Thurman

For me, this work makes me come alive. I believe that creatively engaging with the world – and especially with one another – is what really helps us all come alive.

And this is what leads to my belief in Basic Income.

I believe that Universal Basic Income is not only possible, but absolutely necessary for us to survive the shifts across the world as a result of changes in employment, types of jobs, and the very nature of 'work' that are to come (many that are already happening). It is one thing that will allow people to really come alive and pursue their talents in all their wonderful, myriad variety.  I have pledged that any income from Patreon above a 'Basic Income’ will be re-distributed to others.

This model could be used by artist organisations and cooperatives to create the opportunities and environment required to nurture newly emerging artists and give everyone the opportunity to take risks by providing a financial safety net from precariousness.

"The recent
study published by the Center for Cultural Innovation (CCI) on trends and conditions facing artists today makes the case that the most important issues facing artists today aren’t artist specific—they are systemic and structural issues in our economy and society overall."

~Alexis Frasz, researcher and cultural strategist with
Helicon Collaborative, and was the co-author of Creativity Connects: Trends and Conditions Facing U.S. Artists.

There are many cases to be made for a Universal Basic Income. I find the possibility of unleashing human creativity from the constraints of 'the market's and 'to earn a living' the most compelling. The world needs that creativity now more than ever.  Now is the time to make this happen!

There is a growing community of people telling the world that this is an idea whose time has come. See more of why Universal Basic Income is the key idea of our time on my Twitter account @Creators4UBI.

If you are curious about the potential of crypto currencies to play a part in a Basic Income-like solution, I invite you to have a look at Manna. https://www.mannabase.com/?ref=38bd5a50c7

This Patreon account will continue to evolve, as it has been doing, over time. As new projects and ideas are developed, join me in the journey and together let’s create the future!

“The BIG Patreon Creator Pledge"

Taking a page from the Creative Commons concept of Share Alike, any and every patron dollar pledged above $1,000 per month I will consider to be greater than a basic income and will pledge away to other Creators here on Patreon also creating content in support of their own basic incomes by making the same pledge to limit their own final goals to $1,000/mo and pledging to give the rest to others making the same pledge. My goal here is to create a community of content creators all working toward their own basic incomes with the same shared goal of achieving basic incomes for others.

Thanks to Scott Santans for this idea! Leading by example is one of the most powerful ways to create an impact.

“creativity keeps the world alive, yet, everyday we are asked to be ashamed of honoring it, wanting to live our lives as artists. i’ve carried the shame of being a ‘creative’ since i came to the planet; have been asked to be something different, more, less my whole life. thank sprit,  my wisdom is deeper than my shame, and i listened to who i was.  i want to say to all the creatives who have been taught to believe who you are is not enough for this world, taught that a life of art will amount to nothing, know that who we are, and what we do is life. when we create, we are creating the world. remember this, and commit.”

Goals
$6 of $50 per month
My first goal is to build enough momentum to ensure I have the time to focus on art and making a contribution to the Basic Income movement. Having enough supporters at the $1 level to achieve this goal will enable me to regularly focus on this. With the help and support of those willing to commit to any level of funding here, I can make progress towards creating the world I want to see.
