Creativity, Artists, & Universal Basic Income

“creativity keeps the world alive, yet, everyday we are asked to be ashamed of honoring it, wanting to live our lives as artists. i’ve carried the shame of being a ‘creative’ since i came to the planet; have been asked to be something different, more, less my whole life. thank spirit, my wisdom is deeper than my shame, and i listened to who i was. i want to say to all the creatives who have been taught to believe who you are is not enough for this world, taught that a life of art will amount to nothing, know that who we are, and what we do is life. when we create, we are creating the world. remember this, and commit.”
― Nayyirah Waheed

Background

This Patreon page started life in 2017 as a personal painting project.

My goal originally was to make painting (and art and creativity in general) a daily part of my life. I have found that when you commit to something, the 'Universe' seems to respond. In a bit of kismet, shortly after starting this project, I found that Flora Bowley (the artist who created the one painting course I'd ever taken) was starting a new course: The Creative Revolution, to help make creativity a part of every day! This course, and for me particularly the Art of Aliveness component and The Wayfinding Guide companion workbook created for the course by Anya Hankin, set me on the path to clarifying my thinking and got me in touch with what really matters to me. It helped me see what I wanted more of in my life and how to make that possible.

I realised Artists are also ground breakers. Envisioning better ways to live is what we do; what artists throughout the ages have always done. Both on a personal basis and on a community, society, or global scale, it is the artist who challenges the status quo, who is able to imagine and bring to life a vision of the future for themselves and others.

"Artists to my mind are the real architects of change, and not the political legislators who implement change after the fact." William S. Burroughs

The National Endowment for the Arts found this to be true in their study and report on Creative Placemaking. I am also inspired by the work of Doug Franscisco and his Artspace Lifespace projects. (Have a look and be inspired yourself!) In the back of my mind, I am incubating ideas on how to do something similar in my area - perhaps a project for next year.  Shared creative space and community, in combination with Basic Income, seem like two pillars of a healthy sane society. Seeing what is possible in my area is something I will be exploring in the background this year.

So, this Patreon account continues to evolve as I refine ideas and the focus on what I can do to make a difference.

I am still painting. I will still continue to paint. I am an artist, it is what I do.
I am still a Basic Income Advocate. It is what I believe in. The one thing that would make the largest difference to the most people.

I have struggled somewhat reconciling a personal pursuit with work that I feel is so much bigger. Especially as my own art isn't currently in direct service to Basic Income. (Unlike the great work done by  UBIVisuals here, for example.) But ultimately, the whole point of a Basic Income is to free people to be able to do the work that is in their hearts. So, I'm following mine, trusting that it will lead me in the right direction. Each and every person who can do this is putting all of us one step closer to the world I want to see.

Creating the world you want to see

As artists, it is our job to respond to society and the world we live in, take inspiration from, and use as the raw materials of our creations. It is our job to hold a mirror up to that society: show its beauty, its ugliness, its pain, and its joy. It is also our job to show what we - as a society - might be, what we can be, what is possible.

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”  - Howard Thurman

For me, creativity is the key to this. I believe that creativity is what really help us all come alive.

As a human, I believe that Universal Basic Income is not only possible, but absolutely necessary for us to survive the shifts across the world as a result of changes in employment, types of jobs, and the very nature of 'work' that are to come (many that are already happening). It is one thing that will allow people to really come alive and pursue their talents in all their wonderful, myriad variety.

"The recent study published by the Center for Cultural Innovation (CCI) on trends and conditions facing artists today makes the case that the most important issues facing artists today aren’t artist specific—they are systemic and structural issues in our economy and society overall."
Alexis Frasz, researcher and cultural strategist with Helicon Collaborative, and was the co-author of Creativity Connects: Trends and Conditions Facing U.S. Artists.

The reasons for a Universal Basic Income are many and various. I will be highlighting as many of them as I can. I will be joining the growing community of people telling the world that this is an idea whose time has come. See more of why Universal Basic Income is the key idea of our time on my Twitter account @Creators4UBI.

Many thanks to my Patrons who are directly helping me make this vision a reality!

"The BIG Patreon Creator Pledge"

Taking a page from the Creative Commons concept of Share Alike, any and every patron dollar pledged above $1,000 per month I will consider to be greater than a basic income and will pledge away to other Creators here on Patreon also creating content in support of their own basic incomes by making the same pledge to limit their own final goals to $1,000/mo and pledging to give the rest to others making the same pledge. My goal here is to create a community of content creators all working toward their own basic incomes with the same shared goal of achieving basic incomes for others.

Thanks to Scott Santans for this idea!
