Speculative City is a bi-annual magazine featuring literary works that explore themes, characters, and landscapes exclusive to urban environments.
Each issue of Speculative City strives to push the boundaries of a particular theme, as well as highlight voices often unheard in genre fiction. Such voices may, for example, belong to people of color, queer people, working-class people, and people with disabilities.
In February 2018, Speculative City published its first issue, GROTESQUE, on its website and through e-book. Speculative City will publish a second issue in August 2018.
We, the editors and founders of Speculative City, are excited to continue working with creative writers to publish thought-provoking stories.
WHO WE ARE
We are Meera and Devon, two friends that met through the power of Craigslist—we were roommates. Though we don’t live together anymore, our friendship has continued through our mutual love for speculative fiction.
We have had an incredible time creating this magazine and reading many amazing submissions. We are honored to share this labor of love and look forward to many years of Speculative City.
WHY SUPPORT US?
For the first issue, we were able to offer writers and artists between $20-$75 for their pieces. We believe that contributors should be compensated for the hard work they put into creating the stories, poems, essays, and visual art that they have shared with us. We value their labor and dedication to their art, and payment only makes sense.
As a starting magazine, though, we have no funding and pay contributors out of our own pockets. Because of that, we have only been able to provide a token payment to show our appreciation and give thanks. We would rather pay contributors their fair dues for allowing us to publish their works in the magazine.
One of the primary reasons we ask for your support is so that we can pay our contributors a professional rate like they deserve. (SFWA classifies a professional rate as $0.06 a word.)
The second reason we ask for your support is because we are creating a free resource of contemporary speculative literature. Our website does not feature advertising and all content in the magazine is completely open to the public.
With your help, Speculative City can then
- pay contributors a professional rate,
- continue keeping the website free of advertisements, and
- continue offering the magazine for free.
