Hey folks - my name's Cliff Hicks, and I host Starlight Society, a weekly podcast mixtape that plays music from all around the world. Music discovery is utterly a pain in the ass these days - even algorithmic systems tend to stick close to the bone and don't expose you to the wild, wooly world of music out there.

Since 2015, I've been doing a weekly show that plays all kinds of music you might not even have an idea how to find - Japanese hiphop, German rock, Russian alternative rock, Portugese trip-hop, Chinese pop, Turkish post-rock, you name it. It's a free podcast that you can already get through iTunes, or from the website. We play lots of English-language music too, and as I've always said about the show, if you find a track isn't catching your fancy, skip forward, as the next one might.

Once a month, I also do a "scene" show, designed to offer musical education into something specific. So far, we've been focusing on subgenres - previous shows have included Madchester, goth rock, shoegaze and psychobilly, and I also intend on doing scene shows about record labels (such as SubPop, Matador, etc.) and the musical scenes that have sprung up out of fertile areas like Athens, GA or Chapel Hill, NC.

In additional to playing great music, I try to tell you things about the music, and things about myself and how this music made its way into my life. One of my earlier shows was a weekend spent at my 20 year high school reunion, and walked through a bunch of stories about people I knew, and how that tied in to music. The show is inspired by the legendary UK DJ's John Peel and Jo Whiley, always people eager to bring new sounds to eager ears.

Obviously, I have hosting fees for the podcast server, and often times, music I'm playing on the show isn't available here in the states, so I'm buying CDs from all around the world through a variety of sources. Anything you can do to help offset the cost of the show and of finding the new music to bring to you would be most appreciated.

I'm new to the whole Patreon thing, but the show costs me, best guess, about $75 a month, between server hosting and music acquisition, and anything you can do to help defray that cost is welcome. Even as little as a dollar a month goes a long way into making sure the show is running for a long time to come. Thanks again. You mean the world to me, my audience.

At the start of each month, I'll read off a list of our Patreons from the month before at some point in the show with my thanks. Able to pitch in just a small amount but love the show? Try this.

You pick a country! Every time you put $25 bucks into the pot, you can name a country you'd like to hear something from, and I will find something for next week's show from that country and get it into our playlist. Curious what Indonesian rock sounds like? How about Russian hiphop? Maybe you're wondering about Egyptian metal? Dealer's choice! You only get to pick the country at this level, though!

You pick the country and the genre! Every time you put $50 into the pot, you can name a country AND a genre, and I will do my utter best to find you something that matches both that genre and that country (or a country very close to it). Or maybe you want something from a specific language and a genre. This level works for that too! It won't be in the very next show, but it will be coming, I promise you.
