Being a talented writer is tough. Making a living at this craft that we love takes more than hard work and a college degree – it takes grit, risk, and a dose of good luck.

While most of us can’t count on landing a book deal with a big publisher in the foreseeable future, one way writers and artists can participate in the art community you love is publishing with small presses and literary magazines.

Strangelet is part of that indie community, and like many other small publishers, we don’t make much money doing what we love. What we value is publishing great speculative fiction and other works by new authors and paying them for the writing that they do. It’s important to us to have no-fee submissions as well.

Strangelet’s staff members, alumni of Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, volunteer our time and talents to curate a collection of speculative fiction, poetry, and art six times a year. We are proud to publish an international group of contributors and artists.

Unlike some literary journals, Strangelet’s publishing team has no outside funding other than the cash in our own pockets – and since most of us spend our days in modestly-paid publishing jobs, we would like to ask your help to support the work that we do to support authors and indies in the science-fiction-fantasy community. Do you have a dollar? Do you have ten dollars? You can contribute to the Strangelet cause through Patreon, this crowdfunding platform for supporting the arts. Every little bit helps us pay our writers on a per-word rate and promote their work to the widest audience we can.

At Strangelet, we use Submittable as our submission manager of choice. Submittable is one of the most-used submission engines for lit mags, and it gives us the functionality we need to manage the peer review process with readers near and far. This goal covers the cost of our subscription for the time it takes to produce each issue.
