The global pandemic is impacting self employed and working class people BIG TIME.

We are trying to leverage the limited capital we have to help self employed people working on the periphery/precariously within and beyond higher education.

We'll remotely bring these people onto the podcast to talk about their work/scholarship, but pay them for their time.

About

Welcome to the Surviving Society!

We started recording the podcast after feeling disenfranchised by the way the British news media were reporting on the impacts of austerity, the rise of the far right, the Grenfell murders, Brexit and Trump. We wanted to communicate how sociology students, scholars and community workers could help us challenge and come to terms with what can at times feel like an urgent political moment.

Since 2017, the podcast has developed into an anti-racist platform where we speak with students, academics and community workers about their scholarship. We have aimed to challenge the common sense assumptions about WHO knowledge producers are and how - as sociologists - we should be consistently reflecting on HOW our work is communicated.

We've had a few bits of financial support and generous allies along the way but the majority of the costs of the podcast have come out of our own pockets. This includes editing  for each episode, audio hosting subscriptions, website hosting and a few trips to visit students and academics outside of London. We feel that the podcast is a useful resource for both teaching and research so we are asking members of the academy to support us so we can keep recording and travelling outside of London to reach more anti-racist workers, activists and scholars.

With your support we can -

  • Continue with weekly releases during term time!
  • Travel outside of London to more students, academics and community workers.
  • Pay activists who work outside of Higher Education for their labour
