About The Joy of Violent Movement

Hello! I'm William Ruben Helms. I'm a Queens, NYC-born and-based freelance journalist, photographer and editor. I run the completely independent music, photography and culture website and blog, The Joy of Violent Movement.

During its nine-plus year history, The Joy of Violent Movement has been a labor of love in which the reader/listener/viewer will primarily get an eclectic, genre-defying curation of emerging music from across the globe through the reviews of singles, videos, EPs and albums, live concert reviews and live concert photography, interviews, profiles and the like. Additionally, there's coverage of local cultural events that tie into the site's overall focus of music and culture. Unlike many of the larger sites out there, The Joy of Violent Movement is truly unique. It's one of the few sites out there where you'll see coverage of punk rock, post-punk, country, Latin music, metal, stoner rock, math rock, indie rock, jazz, hip-hop, soul, electro pop, EDM, African Diaspora music, Indian Diaspora music and others existing in the same universe. And I sincerely doubt that you'll come across a site that's as personally curated as JOVM, as JOVM has long been fueled by my lifelong passion and obsession with music.

I've managed to run JOVM as a (mostly) one-man operation out of my Queens, NYC apartment while maintaining several corporate jobs, as a sleep-depriving, time-consuming labor of love. Most of the time, I kind of felt like mild-mannered Clark Kent running into a phone booth to become Superman. But I firmly believe that my mission -- and more importantly, the site's mission is very important. Discovering new music takes up time and energy -- and like everything else, it costs money.  So that end, I'm humbly asking for your support, assistance and love.
