About The Willows Nest

The Willows Nest is a new performance platform and collaborative production space in the heart of Friedrichshain, Berlin. An independent creative space without corporate or institutional funding —  created by participating artists who aim to build community, develop cutting-edge projects, and share their practices in a casual, accessible, and supportive environment. We are dedicated to supporting emerging work as well as new artists while building networks across performing disciplines, developing communities, and present a creative entity through a safe space by sharing work through publication, live streaming and an online presence.

We are dedicated to sustaining collaboration across borders, genres and disciplines, and our location in the heart of Berlin reflects this commitment.  With an incredibly international arts community residing right here in Berlin - and our diverse network of global artists wishing to travel here to present work - we encourage the very best in independent local talent while providing a platform for touring and visiting artists to engage audiences at a grass-roots level.  With our resident ensemble, Improvised Alchemy, we encourage collaboration over competition, and foster a new model for professional artistic engagement at the community level.  In a city that thrives on its artistic culture, it is almost unthinkable that many artists live at or below the poverty line - but artists have to think about this every day.

The Willows Nest was founded by educator, professional composer/performer and producer, Renée T. Coulombe.  Her vision to create a new home for the arts and artists in Berlin became just that: her home.  Part home studio and public venue, part experimental art space and private residence, The Willows Nest seeks to make great art accessible to all audiences through a lively roster of intimate house concerts, workshops, interactive courses, networking, community events. These events are donation based and/or on a sliding scale basis, with no one turned away for lack of funds, believing world-class artistic education can happen in community-based venues.  We are seeking support through Patreon so that we can guarantee every artists who works, presents or performs here guaranteed compensation for their work.  Such guaranteed support for artists has a ripple effect throughout the community, building the financial and professional well being for new generations of artists and performers.

At The Willows Nest we feel every artistic resource needs great community support. We plan to launch a hybrid of creative events with innovative performances and bring them to realization, sharing the breadth of incredible talent that our city of Berlin has to offer. We aim to offer every participating artist reasonable compensation for their performance, regardless of door sales or their community following; to take risks on young talent, or give touring artists the opportunity to build audiences, is essential to successful generations of future talent - and so we seek your support.

Generous and nominal donations at The Willows Nest will keep the lights on and our rent paid. There are many costs in operating a space, from equipment and cleaning to utilities and insurance. Not only will donations help us pay the fees required by the government for presenting every concert, they will lower fees for workshops and classes, and keep external contributions voluntary. The support of our community means so much more, however. We can help shape and model new kinds of artistic institutions designed for the needs of independent artists growing outside traditional schools and institutions, who nonetheless need to get paid for their labor.
