In 2012 we had the unique opportunity to launch Threat Wire, a quick weekly dose of news about security, privacy, and what is threatening the freedom of our Internet. A couple months later, Edward Snowden showed the whole world that the NSA was acting on secret court orders, collecting call records from nearly every telephone company in America and building tools like XKeyScore, that can sniff out "nearly everything a user does on the Internet".
People stopped looking at us like we were wearing tinfoil hats, and started asking how they could protect themselves online, not just from government agencies... if you're getting phishing emails trying to steal your bank info, had to get new credit cards because of security breaches at the likes of Target or Home Depot, or you've heard the President rallying about the evils of Foreign Hackers chances are you've got questions.
We were excited to bring this information to the public in a way that was easy to consume, but in 2013, after 50 shows, Threat Wire ended, and has since been in hiatus. We were offered advertising and sponsorship opportunities, but we passed on them. We wanted to continue this show but keep it completely independent, no ads, no networks. Suddenly, services like Patreon made it easy for viewers like you to support shows directly.
We think it’s time to bring Threat Wire back. The threats to our freedom, and violations of our privacy and security didn't stop after 2013, and neither will we.
