2016, 2017, and 2018 Hugo Award WINNER, Best Semiprozine
Seven-time Hugo Award-winner Lynne M. Thomas (Apex Magazine, Chicks Dig Time Lords, Glitter & Mayhem) and four-time Hugo Award-winner Michael Damian Thomas (Apex Magazine, Queers Dig Time Lords) are seeking support for Uncanny Magazine. Each bimonthly issue of Uncanny contains new and classic speculative fiction, poetry, essays, art, and interviews. Uncanny's monthly podcast includes a story and a poem from each issue and an exclusive interview with one of our creators.
Space Unicorns are for everyone! Uncanny issues are published as eBooks (mobi, pdf, epub) bimonthly on the first Tuesday of each month through all of the major online eBook stores. Every issue contains 5-6 new short stories, 1 reprinted stories, 4 poems, 4 nonfiction essays, and 2 interviews, at minimum.
Subscribers and Patrons at the $2 Level and Above receive each issue in its entirety up front.
Those reading online for free will be able to read the first half of the issue online when the eBook is released, but will have to wait a month for the second half to appear on the first Tuesday of the next month at http://uncannymagazine.com/.
We also produce a monthly podcast featuring a story, a poem, and an interview that is likewise released on the first Tuesday of each month.
Getting to share these stories, articles, and poems with our community of readers is awesome like a space unicorn (hence our mascot). We refer to our supporters as members of the Space Unicorn Ranger Corps.
Year Five is under way, with more fantastic work from writers around the globe. We'd love your help to keep the Space Unicorn Ranger Corps growing. You can support us through Patreon, by subscribing to Uncanny through Weightless Books or Amazon, or by buying single issues through any of the major online booksellers.
The best Science Fiction and Fantasy combines astonishing ideas, strong characterization, gorgeous writing, and distinctive points of view from around the world. We seek out and share stories we can't stop thinking and talking about, because of how they made us feel. Uncanny aims for the feel of a magazine that's been around since the pulp era, with a 21st century sensibility.
We're deeply committed to finding and showcasing new voices in our genre community from around the world. Fully half our content came in as unsolicited submissions. We plan for that trend to continue, and likely grow. We pay $.08 per word for original fiction, $30 per poem, $50 per essay, and $60 per reprinted artwork, all upon acceptance. In addition to paying our contributors, we have website hosting/maintenance costs, editorial costs, taxes, and podcast production/hosting costs.
Your funding goes to the production of future issues of Uncanny, paying our creators a competitive rate, and exploring more ways to bring you great Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Speculative Literature.
