Hi, I’m Meghan!
AKA WitchScience.

Thank you for visiting my page. For the past 15 years I’ve been a new media artist making work with digital technology.  Growing up in Seattle, Washington I have always sought to connect the deep mystical environment of the Pacific Northwest to my fascination with science, technology, and specifically the development of electrical systems.

A few years ago I started making art about electricity and witchcraft. My goal was to challenge how some girls, women, and other underrepresented folks can feel somewhat shut out of STEM, even if they are drawn to it. So I wanted to focus on how historically women have contributed to many scientific disciplines through crafts like the herbal medicines of folk healers to the complex pattern making of weavers.

I also thought it might be fun to think about what it might be like if witches had secretly developed robotic technology centuries ago.  Now this fantastical idea is driving most of my artwork and research.

And then of course I started making memes about all this.  A lot of memes.

I'm hoping you can help support me in moving forward in some of the following art-tech-witch projects...aka WitchScience:

  • making anodes and cathodes from carbonized wood in hand-made molds
  • looking at optimizing low-voltage batteries made from sea water
  • creating conductive materials from medicinal plants
  • research into historically available materials and techniques of the medieval world
  • building mock-ups of witch robotics with contemporary electronics

I'd love to share my journey and process with all of you. Like all creative people the work isn't really finished until it's part of a dialogue with an audience and I'm excited for the potential for this platform to build a new kind of community and engagement! Along the way I'm looking forward with rewarding you all with different perks and thank yous!

My recent art exhibitions include Witancraeftlic at M. Rosetta Hunter Gallery, Computational Witchcraft at AURA Gallery, and Enter the Grim-War: 36 Portals at Equinox Studios. I was commissioned by the Hedreen Gallery at Seattle University for their Robots Building Robots exhibition, the result was a spoken word piece called Robot Philters.

The genesis for this body of work was when I was commissioned by Bridge Productions to create an essay for their limited edition box-set SIGIL, which resulted in my writing The Familiar Algorhythm.  This story was the first time I began to explore a speculative history in which healers were using electricity in ritual and experimentation centuries before the Age of Enlightenment.

Thank you in advance for any support!

“Witchcraft and electricity unite in Trainor's sculptural portrayal of folk healing, magic, and technology, an eerie installation of bones, jars, sigils, and "familiars." The result is an unsettling yet weirdly optimistic vision of hidden feminine occult power.”

PS: Why WitchScience and not my real name? Because I share a legal name with a pop-star. Sometimes I get booted out of left field for being considered an imposter account. You can read about it here.
