Hello! My name is Zainab Akhtar and for the past 4 years, I have been writing about comics on my blog, Comics & Cola (no cola has been produced in this time, but much consumed).
Comics & Cola is a small, independent, ad-free home to news, reviews, interviews, convention reports, and criticism of fresh and interesting comics from around the world. I'm a pretty omnivorous reader, so the range of comics covered is broad: webcomics, Euro comics, Japanese comics, art/literary comics, indie/small press, self-published work, all genres. My goal is simply to engage with work that gets me excited about the medium, which makes me want to put pen to paper and share it with people; work which doesn't garner much coverage elsewhere. That remit also sometimes involves writing about illustration, zines, gaming, and toys and figures. The focus is 96% pure comics but because these mediums and the artists who work within them so often crossover, it's difficult to resist writing about some of the amazing projects and work being done.
I have written for various publications: The AV Club, The Comics Journal, The Guardian, Publisher's Weekly, Comics Alliance, Comics Beat, and Forbidden Planet, but I've found that a few articles dotted here and there about a great Swedish comic or an interview with a rising British cartoonist tend to get lost amidst the noise and don't have the same impact as having one place to visit with concentrated strength of purpose and voice. Which is essentially the reason for turning to Patreon. I believe the best home for my writing is Comics & Cola, but more than that I believe that the comics and artists I write about are important and worthwhile, so the maintaining of the site as a space for diverse comics is important to me, and hopefully to others as well. I am really proud of the blog (it was nominated and not-so graciously lost an Eisner last year), especially the way that it seems to connect with people, and it's been incredibly affirming to see people interested in engaging with the medium in a similar way.
Currently the blog updates at least twice a week, and some of the ways I'm looking to improve it is increase the content, get in some excellent guest columnists to write about their specialist subject areas, pay interview trasncribers, and to actually commission cartoonists to produce strips, too. I truly love comics and writing about them, and with your help I want to make Comics & Cola as strong and vital and as exciting a place as the medium itself.
I've set up only one pledge level of $1 to keep things as straightforward and as simple as possible (you can pledge more if you want). If this is something you'd like to support and see grow, then a small, regular commitment would mean a lot. Thank you!
