What is Ace Linguist and why do we need it?

Ace Linguist is a website and overall "project" I own where I post articles about linguistics, the scientific study of language. I write a variety of articles concerning linguistic phenomenon:

  • research conducted by me to document and explain a real world phenomenon I noticed and felt was under-studied
  • explaining linguistic concepts to beginners and contextualizing them with real-world examples, as opposed to examples blatantly made up for a text book
  • opinion articles where I talk about my point of view on some language-related issue

I have noticed that in general, people seem very interested in linguistics once I explain what it actually is. However, most linguistic knowledge is not aimed at general readers or beginners at all. Most interesting linguistic research is locked behind a paywall. Due to ignorance about what linguistics is but interest in language, this leads to writing about linguistics that is ultimately inaccurate and misleading. In short, Ace Linguist is founded on these principals:

  • Linguistics is a fascinating and interesting subject
  • People want to learn about linguistics
  • Most linguistics research is behind a paywall and too obscure
  • What is available to the public is unnecessarily simplified
  • Ace Linguist provides linguistics content about real-world phenomena to the public without condescendingly simplistic explanations or obtuse impenetrable jargon

Why do you need a Patreon?

Good question! Most of the articles I write on Ace Linguist do not cost me anything to write. I often use citations from popular websites, or try to find research that is publicly available. This is partly on purpose, as I want other people to have access to the sources I'm using and not have them locked behind a paywall. Patreon donations would go to primarily two things - research and hosting costs.

First, research: some posts simply need citations that must be paid for. I have purchased books before for the purpose of writing a post. Here is a sample of books that I bought while I was writing about how the Founding Fathers really sounded like. Most of these ended up being cited, but some were just used for general research. As you can see, these books are costly - I spent $80 on research for the Founding Fathers post. I used to be able to swallow these costs on my own, but my situation has changed and I am no longer able to do so. The Founding Fathers post is exemplary of the type of content I would like to continue making - taking together information that was previously only available to academics and putting it all together in one place for anyone to see, and to have all the sources be available to them to cite or check.

  • Accents of English Vol.1 - $15.00
  • English Pronunciation of the Eighteenth Century - $30.00
  • Speaking American - $28.00
  • American English - $7.00
A stretch goal is to have access to JPASS, which is $19.50 a month, so that I can bring you research that is more recent and cutting-edge.

What about hosting? My commitment to making content using examples from the real world means I have to host that content myself. I pay $10 monthly for Dropbox. I also pay for a domain name so that nobody has to look at an ugly 'acelinguist.blogspot.com' URL. Without Dropbox for business, there would be too much traffic to the audio content and regular Dropbox would disable the links.

What do I get in return?

Up until now most of my research has been secret and announcements about future posts have been purposefully vague to build a sense of suspense (and also to prevent anyone from being "inspired" by a work in progress c;). In exchange for helping Ace Linguist continue to be a well-cited site with easily available content, you will be privy to articles I am working on at the moment, research notes about the process of writing an article, and able to let me know directly which of the posts I'm working on you would prefer me to prioritize!
