About Us

For those of you new to our work, In June of 2015, the nonconforming women-wisdom keepers of San Diego started meeting for monthly women's teaching circles organized through Active Culture Family. In 2018, Active Culture Family gave birth to Medicine Mandala, a year long full spectrum herbal education program that is being given the opportunity to establish roots on sacred land in the Cleveland National Forest at a private homestead called Elder Farm.

Through Plant, Food, and Fungi Medicine, Sound, Movement, Silence, and Stillness, our year long program helps practitioners of the healing arts align their practices within the larger context of seasonal rhythms, and begin or deepen their ability to collaborate with plants in various ways for more effective healing. Our program is an opportunity to begin or recommit to a journey to right relationship, to ourselves, to our communities, and to the planet and all her inhabitants. Graduates of our program go on to become assets to healthy communities around the country as Doulas, Folk Herbalists, Farmers, Mothers, Teachers, Wholistic Health Care Professionals and Supportive Friends.

Follow our Progress

It seems many people know in their heart the reality they would like to be living, but it feels so far away/ inaccessible. We believe that the time is now to jump in the fast moving river of life, exactly as we are, as “works in progress” and role modeling what it looks like to live the transitional strategies rather than longing for unachievable ideals.

So for example, at first our forest temple was just a really cool deck in the woods, and then by the next season, there was a humble structure on top of it. We climbed on a little wooden box to get inside. With a 100% fire ban in the Cleveland National Forest, our rituals were illuminated by battery operated plastic candles from Target. The spirit of the Fire smiled on us and came anyway and we were grateful.  A few seasons later we were able to add insulation and build the stairs.
Next we were able to buy a suuuper heavy and not very strong rechargeable battery to provide enough power for 2 hours of evening lighting via christmas lights. We rolled it to the nearest electrical socket a third of a mile aways in a little garden cart to recharge each night, and again, we were grateful!  Last November, we had a rental porta potty. By February, we had our first dry toilet,  built as a favor by a friend. We now have a full time “Poo Priestess” dedicated to maintaining our complete, closed-loop waste management system. In 2017 Our amazing sisters cooked all year long in a pop up tent where ants, yellow jackets, and raccoons were their constant companions. This summer we built our adorable and fully functional enclosed camp kitchen. The completion of our first year was nothing short of a miracle of collaboration and dedication- a true medicinal mandala of plant, elemental, and human efforts on behalf of our shared vision of moving in the ever-shifting direction of a more regenerative, more harmonious way of life.

So far, the birth of our school has been entirely funded by Creative Director Yaya Erin Rivera Merriman and our first year’s graduate apprentices. We are eternally grateful to this group of first responders who heard the call and showed up strongly to help make our dream of a forest sanctuary, nature hospital, culture farm, and library of earth magic a reality! And we are not there yet!

Our Needs Continue to Grow as we Grow

The temple is built on structureless soil and requires a retaining wall to be built before the rainy season. When a tree starts to come down on the property, it can cost up to $1200 to have it safely removed. The oak trees have been effected by the oak bore beetle, and we are watching our beloved forest ecosystem weaken daily. The smallest cedar tree from a good local nursery costs $110 dollars. We have partnered with For the Wild and the Cleveland National Forest Foundation, giving each month to their ongoing and larger scale reforestation initiatives, knowing in our hearts that without our forests intact, there is no sanctuary, no medicine, no healing.

We had a beautiful first year, and the realities of maintaining a physical healing space and truly being in right relationship with the land and the local community are quickly outnumbering our personal earning capacity.

Our Goal

Our goal is to be a mostly wild place where folks can go to regenerate, connect with their own ancestors, guides, and nature spirits, and learn practical and esoteric skills for moving creatively, joyfully, respectfully and effectively within the web of life. One of the most transformative experiences for us has been the journey of de-colonizing our relationship with food. Again it is a journey and we are not there yet, but we are so passionate about sharing Traditional Nutrition as a critical step in healing our bodies, our communities and our planet and are ready to open to receive support from the local and extended community alike for finishing our cookbook

The Way of The Cauldron:
A Kitchen Witches’ Guide to The Art of The Ritual Feast

that we have been working on for the past 6 months with the encouragement of all of you!

Long Story Short

Thank you in advance for any amount of support you may be able to offer us. In short, your support will help us complete our medicinal foods cookbook and go on to offset the always surprising cost of maintaining an actual physical learning center so that we can focus on getting you more of the content most commonly requested including:

• more affordable local classes at Bridge Temple, our comfortable all-season off-grid temple space
• online programs for distance community
• new episodes of the Starseed Survival Guide Podcast
• more scholarships for women of color, solo moms, and farmers for our year long program
• our financial support of more local environmental and human rights action groups
• new products in our web shop
• more session hours open for booking

Thank you in advance for supporting us in increasing our capacity to serve the growth of your creative, spiritual, emotional and physical wellbeing and the wellbeing of the community and planet fully!

Blessings and Love,
