Support a radical new voice in film, fiction, and philosophical publishing.

I'm a teacher for my main job, but I've also pursued artistic projects in theatre, journalism, philosophy, and literature for a few years now. Come with me on a journey into uncharted artistic and creative territory that blends cinema, literature, and philosophy. Here are the currently ongoing projects you'll be supporting.

Adam Writes Everything: This is both a general description of what I do and the title of my blog, where I've been discussing the daily work of writing, research, and thinking that's gone into all my creative projects since Summer 2013. This is my space to discuss all the ideas that I weave into my work – and I write it a minimum of five days each week already. So if you support my work, you'll also support the creation of new content damn near every day.

The next big publishing project I'm embarking on is a philosophical look at the Peter Capaldi years of Doctor Who. It will include updated versions of essays that I've published on the blog discussing different themes and concepts as they appear in each episode from Deep Breath onward. There will be a few supplementary essays as well, with topics that I'm still figuring out. If Patrons have any suggestions, those will be included too.

I also work with the Syria Film Festival, a peace and arts organization in Toronto. Part of that work is in marketing and promotion, but most relevant to my Patreon supporters is the documentary I'm co-directing with SYFF co-founder Maher Azem. With the working title Around One Table, we're telling the stories of participants in Syrian Welcome Dinners, a small organization that brings together Canadian-born and Syrian newcomer families to build friendships and help people build a new life in a new country. We're working with families who have histories of human rights activism in Canada and in the Middle East, and who've come through harrowing experiences to escape the terror of Syria's war and oppression.

Most posts focus on thinking through ideas that will form my next major work of non-fiction, tentatively titled Utopias. A follow-up to my book on ecological philosophy and politics, Palgrave MacMillan's Ecology, Ethics, and the Future of Humanity, Utopias explores how the most effective political transformations happen – literally changing minds. I also discuss ideas and techniques in my fiction and script writing, as well as journalism work, and essays that I publish at the Reply Collective, an open-access forum for cutting-edge philosophical research in politics and knowledge.

You Were My Friend: An independent feature-length comedy-drama film about the struggles of two roommates in a stagnant economy. Madison spends her days working in the offices of an unsustainable sharing economy company, counting down the days until its bankruptcy. Needing a roommate to save on bills, Vicki answers her ad and moves in. She's a part-time waitress, kicked out of her family home and cut off from the financial support she needs to continue going to college. These accidental best friends could help each other through hard times, or tear their lives apart. This project is adapted from a play of the same name I wrote in 2014 that was performed in Hamilton, Ontario.

If you donate $5 or more each month, you'll have opportunities to help me create content for the Adam Writes Everything blog by participating in a Q & A session about my current project, as well as the ideas and ethics that inform them. I'll also talk with you about your own story, any artistic projects you take part in, or why you like what you like and love what you love. It'll be a chance for you to get to know me, and the Adam Writes Everything community to get to know you. Our conversation will (after being edited for minor errors and maybe cutting up overlong sentences) be posted verbatim, carrying the label Dialogues.

If you want to spot me $10 each month, you will get regular access to what Patreon so suggestively calls "behind the scenes" documents. Here's what that really means in my case: old drafts of scripts, working drafts of articles, stories, and book manuscripts, patron-only editions of previously published work that may be out of print or in such low numbers as to be inaccessible, patron-only speaking notes or rewrites of spoken presentations (which may include slide shows with silly pictures). As well as any other working or draft document I can think of later on. Do more with this than just see the process – Talk to me! Ask me why I didn't pursue one angle over another. Or see if a discarded idea can work in another context. Use some of these drafts to create specifically commissioned work. Ask me what you can imagine, and I'll see what I can make real. No promises in advance on a lot of that, of course. But let's talk!

Throw in $40 each month, and you'll have a different way to see your name appear in print or spoken on film. I will name a character after you in one of my fiction or screenwriting projects. These may be a bit character, or they may be a supporting character with a decent number of lines and scenes. These opportunities are limited, of course, but not in any hard sense. When you get your name on a character depends on how many characters I have available to name in current projects, compared to patrons making the request. If there's a backlog (which would be very nice – hint, hint), it may take a while for a patron to get their meta-fictional moment. Also, I'll run a rough profile of the character by a person to see if they're comfortable with having their name attached to it. It doesn't take much imagination to see how that situation could get awkward fast.
Goals
$39 of $500 per month
At this level of support, I'll be able to pursue more independent book publishing opportunities. That includes, for example, returning to my paused project Sunnyvale Psychochronography on the philosophy and social-political ideals of Canadian neo-classic comedy Trailer Park Boys. But it also means being able to publish shorter texts that expand some of my blog posts on historical philosophical figures into longer essay collections. They'd preview the ideas in the big giant project on political philosophy, Utopias
