Thrym, Stealer of the Hammer

$5
per month
Named for the Jotun who demanded Freiya in exchange for returning Mjolnir, but was tricked by Thor and Loki dressing in drag.

In addition to monthly updates on my projects & progress, you'll get early access to new ExUrbe blog posts, and to other projects when they get going, for example to podcast episodes and new music recordings. (Proviso: occasionally if a blog post is extremely time-related I may rush it out w/o this, but that'll be rare.)

I also really do enjoy doing AMAs and talking with readers, I just need to ration how much time I give to it, so if I'm doing an interview or talk or AMA somewhere I'll always announce it in the newsletter, and if there's ever a long lull in them then I'll do an exclusive Patreon one every so often, but when I'm doing them regularly I'll direct you to them from here, again to make sure I don't let fun reader chat eat up too much time!

Thiazi, Stealer of the Apples

$10
per month
Named for Skadi's father, the cunning shapeshifter who forced Loki to help him steal Idunn and her apples of youth.

In addition to early access to new things, this tier will get mailings with short excerpts from my writing, sometimes a snippet or two of an upcoming work-in-progress, or an outtake relic from my archive of paragraphs that were cut from earlier Terra Ignota books but have interesting content, or just that rich Mycroft voice.

I also love answering reader questions (but have a bad habit of writing really long answers & losing a lot of time at it) so supporters at this tier will be invited to submit questions and hopefully that won't be too many and I'll answer one or two in each monthly newsletter (all tiers get to see the answers).

Utgardaloki, the Illusionist

$20
per month
Named for the Jotun lord who tricked Thor and his companions with a series of rigged contests, and got away with it!

At this tier you get everything in the tier below plus a few times a year (possibly monthly depending on what I'm working on) an extra something. What? It'll vary: recordings of me reading passages from my novels, a chunk of a project that didn't come to fruition, a rough but fun music recording, maybe an academic conference paper draft, download codes for things, or new stickers or other swag if I make some for new releases, or if (as sometimes happens) a 2ndary publisher (French, UK, Polish) makes a promo card for their translated edition etc. The specifics will vary as my projects do, but I'll make sure it's always exciting!

About Ada Palmer

I'm Ada Palmer, I'm a writer, historian, science fiction & fantasy novelist (author of Terra Ignota), blogger, composer of complex polyphonic a cappella music (performing with Sassafrass), history faculty at the University of Chicago, and a specialist in the history of censorship, radical thought, books, printing, and ideas in Europe, especially in the Renaissance and Enlightenment. I also have sidelines in disability activism, post-WWII manga/anime especially Osamu Tezuka, and in gelato. Very serious gelato. I'm also starting up a podcast with my good friend and fellow novelist/history lover Jo Walton, where we'll discuss craft of writing, history, food, reading, books, fantasy and science fiction, research, science, why we both love Florence, and other cool topics, with a range of guests, some fellow genre fiction writers, and some others.

The goal of this Patreon is to let me hire help, so I can create more. I want to be clear about that. I have a salary from my teaching and am not, like many brilliant creators, struggling to eat and pay my bills. For me this is about time. As a disabled chronic pain sufferer, my days don't have 24 hours in them, and that makes it very hard to carve out time for fiction writing, history writing, music, blogging, and other creative projects against the fire-hose of time commitments that comes from teaching and university life.

But with more money I can hire more help, and create more.

I can pay Denise, a brilliant and innovative theater practitioner from Global Hive Labs who helps me with email, calendar, and web stuff so I don't fall helplessly behind when the pain days add up. I can pay Clarissa, the phenomenal young audio/video editor who's eager to do the audio editing for the podcast. I can pay someone to help polish my lecture transcripts into new blog posts, and someone else do the sound editing for the pile of completed recordings for the unfinished Sassafrass: Friend in the Dark album which I can't release because I don't have the time (or wrist stamina) to do the audio editing. I can pay the experts and sensitivity readers who generously read my manuscripts to make them even better, and who should be compensated for their time and effort. And maybe I can even pay the students with writing & publishing interests who periodically ask if they can do internships with me, helping and learning about writing, editing, and publishing, and I'd love to say yes but have had no means to pay them.

That's the idea. My most limited resource is time, so if a little extra money becomes help, which becomes time, that becomes the extra fruits (essays, fiction, music, the time to say 'yes' to an interview or podcast) which I hope this will make possible. The tiers explain what benefits there will be, mainly things like works in progress, early access, and excerpts from old files or recordings, but there won't be lots of exclusive polished things or frequent one-on-ones as with some patreons, because the goal is to give me time to create more to share with everyone, not just a few.  Thus my promise to you is that I'll share fun things, but also that I'll always make sure this Patreon gives me more time than it takes from me, to avoid the trap wherein creating exciting goodies can end up taking longer than the time gained. For all your support, enthusiasm, and excitement to see my work and help there be more of it, you have my deepest thanks.
