My name is Arthur Gies, and I'm a writer (and also a painter and a drawer, but that's not what this is about). I'm a somewhat known quantity as a writer and reviewer covering video games (and occasionally movies!), who among other things co-founded Polygon dot com, a video game website on the internet.

I left my job as Reviews Editor at Polygon to pursue a Masters degree in painting and drawing. But! I still think a lot about games (and other things!), and one of the things I miss about having a regular staff gig is helping people find things they'd enjoy, that maybe make their lives a little better.

I still write now, and sometimes people even pay me, like Rolling Stone and Variety. However, I don't have a place to consistently write, or, as importantly, the sort of vague mental push to actually do it that springs conveniently from a staff gig or regular freelance. So, I'm doing this.

To be clear, it isn't just about a writerly impulse — graduate school is expensive, and so is living in the bay area, and my graduate school is in the bay area, so, I'm just saying, the math isn't pretty.

Money is good, is what I'm saying.

Or rather, the current state of capitalism is a disaster and the system is creaking but money is necessary to continue to exist within that system and I don't really like camping so going off the grid isn't an option.

My goal is to write here. Ideally that thing will be at minimum bi-weekly, though sometimes I'll have something to say that doesn't fit into a regimented schedule. That thing will probably be a recommendation (but not always), about video games, but it might also be about a book, or a movie, or some other pop culture thing with an overlap in games spaces, generally speaking. If by some miracle I hit a certain backer amount, these things may be become more common. If it hits a higher amount ... who knows? I've got to draw a line, since, you know, I'm fairly busy drawing actual lines and jesus I'm sorry I won't be making a lot of puns like that probably.

You can pledge what you want, but there won't really be additional rewards, outside of some kind of personalized thank you. If you want to read my stuff and pay for it, here you go! If you want to compensate me regularly for the work I do on Rebel FM — but, and this is big, this is not a Rebel FM Patreon, this is just for me — also here you go! And if you want to read my stuff without paying for it, I'll put it online a little later (but probably not too much later). But, there's some expanded stuff that will likely only go up here.

I am embarrassed to even make this an option.
