I'm an independent musician, DJ, entrepreneur, small business owner.. struggling but working hard every day to provide the world with entertainment through music, art, comedy, and inspirational advice. I transport and set up equipment, and I provide entertainment services for private events in New Jersey, New York City, and the surrounding area for parties, weddings, and any other event that needs a DJ: AfinoEntertainment.com

As an artist, in my spare time (whenever possible), I share new music on SoundCloud, in Mixshows on YouTube and Mixcloud, social media, and I produce original music, remixes, mashups, and edits.. available on iTunes (Apple Music), Spotify, Amazon, iHeartRadio, and many other platforms. The full collection of my work can be found on my other website here: AFINOMUSIC.com

I created this Patreon account because I need some help. 2018 was a year of financial torture for me. It started with a large investment into the cryptocurrency market in the middle of 2017. I learned about Bitcoin, spent nearly every single day researching more about the technology, and decided to invest everything I had, including borrowed money (incredibly stupid decision). I believe in the potential of blockchain tech, but the 2017 bull market spoiled myself and many others. If I had any prior experience, I would have been much more careful and conservative.

When the market started to crash in January, I didn't sell the assets. I held on. I didn't want to become "disloyal" to the technology I believed in. At the time, an investment of $20,000 had become worth over $70,000.. but in the span of just 4 months, I lost it all, including my initial investment. How? I tried trading what I had to preserve the "USD value," with barely any knowledge or experience, and it cost me a great deal. Now I'm in debt over $35,000, and unfortunately, it gets worse.

In April, after 4 months of watching my money essentially disappear into the internet, I was contacted by Thumbtack.com with an opportunity to DJ an event for them in New York City. I had been using Thumbtack for over 4 years at this point. They're a company that connects customers with service providers. Thumbtack is the #1 reason I was able to create and start my entertainment business, providing DJ services every weekend. Why? It was relatively new, and I capitalized on that opportunity. I was hired over 260 times, and I had acquired over 160 five-star reviews in a short period of time (real, legitimate reviews verified by Thumbtack themselves).

This is why they contacted me, out of any other DJ on the platform in the New York City area, because of my success and because of my dedication to the service we provide. They asked me to perform a corporate event for them in Manhattan, for 12 hours playing music, while press came to interview, photograph, and interact with the various service providers Thumbtack invited to be a part of the event, including myself. I was honored, and after everything that happened with my investment failure, I felt like hope was being restored into my life with this new opportunity. The only reason I invested so heavily in the first place was because, despite my success, there was always a shortage of money needed to move forward with producing content, new music, and anything else I wanted to do as an independent artist.

Well, here's where things took a turn for the worst. Thumbtack hired me, paid me, and then I received an email from them with the following statement: "Our event is quickly approaching and I couldn't be happier that you are going to be a part of it. In the meantime, it is a requirement that all pros involved in the event have a background check that was taken in the last 18 months. Here is a link to take it.." I was hesitant at first, because 10 years ago, when I was 18 years old, I was arrested for marijuana-related charges. To keep a long story short, I was addicted to drugs at the time, my family life fell apart, I was homeless for 4 months, my parents got a divorce, and things just weren't going well for me for a period of 1 - 2 years after graduating high school. It was a very traumatic experience. In the end, I served time, paid a lot of money toward fines, completed a drug rehabilitation program, and started working hard toward reversing the damage.

2014 - 2018 had become the best period of my life. Thumbtack allowed me to do what I love, even though I rather be producing music and traveling the world, I have still been able to make a living providing entertainment at events and weddings, and I have been able to work with music every day. It's truly a blessing. Well, when Thumbtack sent me that email, I was wondering whether or not my record would prevent me from performing the event for them. The quote I provided earlier was the entire message in the email. Looking back now, I should have asked questions before clicking the link, because what happened next was devastating. Not only did Thumbtack deny me from performing the event for them, they simultaneously and immediately deactivated my Thumbtack account and deleted the 160 five-star reviews I had worked so hard for while using the platform. I was able to recover them using an archived version of the webpage. I put together screenshots and added them to my website here: Thumbtack Reviews

So.. here we are. It's October of 2018, and I now have over $35,000 worth of debt. First, I lost a large sum of money with a poorly educated investment decision, hoping I could finally have the money I needed to invest in real estate, get an actual home for my girlfriend Stephanie and I (we still live in a small apartment in Fort Lee), and perhaps more free time to produce music, connect with artists and other entrepreneurs in the area (we're originally from Ocean County, an hour south, so I still don't know anyone up here in this area whatsoever), and some capital to further my career as an independent artist and a small business owner. Then Thumbtack, the platform responsible for 90% of my bookings, made a decision that would have never been made if I had not accepted to provide a service for them... Feels like the universe wants me dead.

Throughout the remainder of this year, still providing entertainment for weddings and other events, I've been suffering with suicidal thoughts, depression, and a complete loss of hope at times. I've tried nearly every other option, and I am continuing to try every day to not only reverse the damage, but to find other solutions. I've hired a highly recommended Google Ads Manager (Logical Position) so that we can promote ads using Google, I continue to produce content on social media, run ads there, and I've signed up to other platforms like Bark, Eventective, GigMasters, and WeddingWire with very little luck. In fact, it's been a complete and total loss of money, on top of the losses I've already endured. Hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars being spent on advertising, with nearly zero bookings.

This is where I'm at now. I've been suffering for nearly an entire year now. I've been wanting to talk about it and ask for help from fans, friends, and family every day.. but I don't want sympathy and I wanted to do everything I possibly could before resorting to asking for help. My entire life, I've been someone that wants to help others, without expecting anything in return. It's most likely one of the major reasons as to why I've never been financially successful, no matter how hard I work.. I always give more than I ask for. It's a blessing and a curse. It brings me great joy to help others, but when the struggle gets heavy.. it's brutally unbearable.

This is the message I'm sharing with the world now. Don't worry about the Thumbtack situation.. I've already received recommendations from people, of which nothing worked. I have no case against them. Every lawyer I spoke to told me it's not worth my time. I can't expunge my record either, because I have "one too many" on my record, which means I'm not eligible for an expungement in New Jersey (great! lmao – seriously, if anyone young is reading this.. DON'T get in trouble.. do the right thing.. it's not even possible to reverse the damage!). That's it for now. I hope this story evolves into something better.. something positive.. something that will help and inspire someone else out there to avoid my mistakes, and to become successful.. to find happiness.. to become something great.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm not looking for sympathy. I don't deserve that. There are other people out there suffering far worse. There are people being treated much more unfairly. There are people suffering from incurable diseases. No matter how unfair this situation feels and seems, accepting responsibility for it is the right decision I choose to make. If anyone out there made it to the end of this message and you want to help, that is the reason I created this Patreon page. If you know me, you know the work that I am capable of producing. If you don't, take a moment to check out my content. If you enjoy it, and you want to see more, even just a donation of $1 is so incredibly helpful.

There have been times I've spent hundreds of dollars promoting music and mixshows online, to be compensated with only a few dollars from streaming royalties. It's been literally 100% unprofitable these past 4 - 5 years of my life. My income as a DJ has been funding all of my artist-related content. It's something I do because I love it, and I want to make people happy. Just $1 is helpful! I hope that I can continue to do this and become successful again and put all of this pain and suffering behind me. It's been a long road to get to where I am now, and we still don't have much at all. We've been living below our means for a very long time. I rarely get to eat out, go on a date with Stephanie, or enjoy any form of entertainment or relaxation, besides Netflix (no exaggeration).

I appreciate any help that we receive, and I hope to connect with and thank each and every single person that lends us their help and support (it doesn't have to be a donation.. a job opportunity.. literally anything is helpful). Thank you, whether you donate or not, for reading this message, and for accepting me for who I am, who I was, and who I want to become. For anyone else out there struggling.. keep your head up, try to stay positive, as hard as it seems sometimes.. and don't forget to ask for help. You're not alone.
