About

REGISTERED Non Profit Organisation NPO (244 752 - NPO).

A Hog's Life is home to abused, neglected and forgotten animals & a safe space for them to heal. It is my passion & I believe my purpose in life to give back to those animals and re-awaken their wounded spirits. We do our best to heal their body and soul & send our furry, feathered and fluffy friends off into a better life!

Before you can read our story, I would like to share some numbers with you, so you can see and understand why we are in need of your help!

Our running costs based on an average of 20-25 dogs, 10 cats, 19 pigs and 15 chickens in our care/ month: (all amounts in South African Rand)

  • Dog food pallets (also used to feed some community dogs/ sick dogs in treatment), dog food meats & tins, dog treats: approx. R 12,800 (= 700$) - we find lots of old dogs in our care, dogs with no teeth, sick dogs who need special food which increases those costs
  • Cat food pallets, wet food, tins: approx. R 2,300 (= 130$)
  • Pig food, vegetables, fruits, noodles...: approx. R 9,000 (= 480$)
  • Chicken food: approx. R 400 (= 25$)
  • Tick & Flea treatment/ prevention dogs: approx. R 3,750 (= 200$)
  • Our helping staff, employed from local villages and Malawi (it is important to employ local workers coming from low & no-income families, especially living in a rural area surrounded by poverty): R 20,000 (= 1,050$)
  • Water & electricity: R 3,500 (= 200$)
  • No rent for property, as we purchased the property ourselves (R 1,000,000), rates & taxes go on our account
These costs are not monthly, but apply to each animal and are based on the situation:

  • Vaccination dog/ cat: R 300 (= 17$)
  • Spay female dog/ cat: approx. R 750 - R 1,300 (= 40$ - 72$) - depending on vet
  • Spay male dog/ cat: approx. R 750 - R 1,000 (= 40$ - 55$) - depending on vet
  • De-worming dog/ cat: R 10 - R 30 (= 0,60$ - 1,80$)
  • Vet visit: consultation fee R 150 - R 450 (= 8$ - 25$), all further costs totally depend on the treatment. For example x-ray R 1,000 - R 2,000 (= 55$ - 110$), chemotherapy each therapy R 600 (= 32$), eye surgery R1,300 (= 72$) + medication. Each vet visit easily adds up to R 1,500 - R 4,500 (= 63$ - 240$)
  • Petrol: we live in a very rural area and the closest vet is over 1 hour drive away, so are shops to buy groceries, animal food etc, a vet visit to get x-rays done is a drive of almost 300km, work related petrol costs add up to R 3,000 - R 5,000 per month (= 165$ - 275$)
  • Medication in stock: As vets are far away, it is essential to have medication here. We also service the local community with free medication and treatments and are always available for emergencies and call outs. Here a list of medication we always have in stock and an approx. idea on costs for some items: - Metacam 100ml (pain & antiflam dogs) R 400 (= 25$) - pain killer pills dogs - pain killer pills cats - antiflam pills - Purbac antibiotics - duplocillin antibiotics 250ml R 400 (= 25$) - Berenil 100ml R 200 (= 12,50$) - Forray 65 R 400 (= 25$) - Vitamin B 100ml R 120 (= 7$) - deworming pills - Ivermax 1% 500ml R 600 (= 32$) - wound desinfection spray R 120 (=7$) - betadine - activated charcoal R 300 (= 17$) - cortison pills - ear cleanser - ear ointment - liver support - disprin - Fortekor 5 R 100 (= 6$) - allergex - CBD cream - coconut oil - syringes in different sizes - needles - bandages - gauze swabs - flea spray - dog/ cat shampoo ETC. To get the kit together once you spend around R 4,500 (= 250$)
  • Dog/ cat blankets: each approx. R 60 (= 3,60$) - we need at least 60 - 80
  • Food bowls, dog/ cat beds etc. - we always have to add or replace
  • Maintenance on dog camps, property and vehicle
SUMMARY: Monthly we have fixed costs of at least R 54,750 - R 56,750 (= 2,950$ - 3.060$). NOT INCLUDED any medication, vet visits, spays, deworming, vaccination, dog blankets, food bowls, beds, maintenance of any kind! To get one dog ready with spay, deworming, vacination costs between R 1,060 - R 1,630 (= 57$ - 88$) no petrol included to get to the vet for spaying. Any emergency adds a big amount on our running costs.

A Hog's Life is still very young and I believe that this is just the humble beginning of something really big to come. Please take a minute to read our story and help us grow our dream into something really special!

Our Story:

It all started in January 2016 when I fostered and then adopted my first rescue dog: Mardy. She was only 5 weeks old and had been thrown into a garbage bin behind a medical clinic. Declared as garbage, dehydrated, only skin & bones and horribly hurt - that's how the local animal shelter found her, not knowing if she would survive the night & urgently looking for a warm place for her to sleep. I fell in love immediately with her sad eyes and shortly after her rescue she moved in with my husband and I. We did not admit it for another 3 days, but in our hearts we knew she would not leave us again. She became our rescue cats new little sister. In the same year we adopted another 2 dogs and started to become a regular foster home for shelter dogs, both young and old. Giving those animals a home, showering them with love and to make people realize what wonderful family members they will be and eventually finding them homes, was the most rewarding feeling I have had in a long time and helped me to deal with all the pain I feel knowing about millions of animals suffering in this world because of us humans.

In 2017 I got more involved with the local animal shelter. I assisted vets for spay campaigns, volunteered my time to walk dogs & give love to the cats, trained dogs, helped with the re-homing process, offered lifts and did home checks & learned a ton. It was the time of my week that made me the happiest, when I was off to the shelter to help those sad animal eyes sparkle again. 2 more dogs moved in with us in 2017 and became part of our wonderful crazy rescue family!

In 2018 I wanted more! I had worked together with the local animal shelter for long enough to realize that I wanted to do it different. It made me sad to see how easily Animal Rescue becomes all about human politics and human ego, it made me sad to see that energy was wasted on the wrong things! I started dreaming about my own Animal Rescue, a place where animals come first, where each animal is loved as if they moved into their "forever home" already. No small cages, not locked away for days, not only waiting for their feeding times and 2 minutes human interaction per day. Rescue animals deserve more. They deserve everything! I knew I would put the energy and time in, I knew I had found my calling.

Sometimes dreams become reality much faster than we expect them to... We put our private savings together and purchased a little farm in our beloved town Hogsback. We were coming to Hogsback since 2015 and always wanted to spend more time in this forest fairy-tale town. Surrounded by lots of small and big villages and towns with high unemployment rates, Hogsback and the surrounding area has a big problem with neglected, abused and sick animals. So there was a huge need for what I wanted to do and we could afford to create the space I needed for it.

We did not waste much time and opened A Hog's Life's doors for the first rescue animals to move in in December 2018. Camps and fences were not built and put up yet, but the chickens, pigs, dogs and cats seemed to find us quicker than we could plan for.

2019 was supposed to be the most exciting & craziest year of my life! Each and every single day my husband and I worked hard to realize our now common goal and dream. We built kennels and a huge dog camp, pig pens, renovated, re-built, made connections to wonderful people, I learned from vets (so today I am able to do lots of the medical treatment on our animals myself), organised and helped out at spay/castration campaigns, started an education program for kids, we created a Teepee Village to help bring in income for our animals, we saved 42 dogs, 11 pigs, 7 cats and 7 chickens and found homes for many of them. And yes, all of this is just the beginning!

A Hog's Life is privately funded. A few donation campaigns on Instagram in the past year helped us out to pay for vet bills and urgently needed water tanks. Other than this, it is our private funds that pay for animal food, medication, tick&flee products, hay, blankets, toys, cars ( mechanics, parts), petrol, building materials, tools, wages ETC. It easily adds up to huge amounts. Unfortunately money kind off rules the world and also what we do. It is easy mathematics: the more money we have to use for our animals, the more we can help. So 2020 will be about getting better and bigger, about doing more and about getting funds in to help us do so! 2020 is all about GROWING!

And that's where Patreon comes in and you can help us! Subscribe & see Exclusive Content, be one of the first to meet our new animals and hear about Rescue Stories first hand! You will be able to help us name our animals and take on sponsorship for your favorite! Some of our tiers will give you discounts on our Teepee accommodation, if you plan on staying with us for a Magical Holiday Experience. JOIN OUR FAMILY! HELP US GROW! Each little amount will help us to care for more animals and provide them with the best care possible! THANK YOU for your amazing support!
Goals
$1,709 of $3,000 per month
With $3.000 we can cover our basic monthly costs and know all our animals and staff will be looked after! While South Africa is in lockdown due to Covid-19, we are not able to generate funding with our holiday rentals and reaching this goal will help us to get through this time and still allow us to help the community and not turn a single rescue away.
