Here is a in-progress note anout Akuru Foundry.

Akuru Foundry is a not-for-profit collaborative initiative tasked with developing, releasing, maintaining and facilitating development of free/libre and open source fonts [for South Asian region] Akuru Foundry believes typography is infrastructure to function of human societies, cultures and economies and believe the people must have access to highest possible quality fonts and the knowledge and the rights to shape how their voice in letterforms is seen.

Akuru Foundry functions as type foundry, maintaining a curated catalogue and a growing library of—well maintained, well documented and high quality—Free/Libre and Opensource fonts for South Asia. AF will feature both originals and redistributions of popular FLOSS fonts.
Akuru Foundry engages with the community, industry, academics and government and international stakeholders in developing the font catalog and facilitates effective collaboration on eliminating font-scarcity and solving critical infrastructural issues in typography and text technologies.

Why this effort?

Sri Lanka has a fonts problem. Specially fonts that have a matching Sinhala Tamil and Latin are extremely rare. There are only around 100 Sinhala fonts out there, made by passionate and enthusiastic hobbyists. While these fonts are being used widely in the advertising and communications industries the quality engineering is way lower than industry standard. We need more fonts; not just any fonts, well engineered, well designed fonts made for the future technologies. So there is a demand, why isn’t there a supply?

The font making process is a highly time consuming and specialised area. And making fonts for Sinhala is particularly time consuming compared to other scripts, due to higher number of character combinations. Typeface design and font engineering requires skills and knowledge across culture, language, technology and aesthetics. All this makes producing fonts for Sinhala and Tamil a sizeable investment for a font maker. But is there a way to get a good return on investment. The Sri Lankan market is not strong enough to buy fonts in the traditional propitery licensing methods. If we need to see more divers fonts and culture we need to invest in the fonts, together. Fonts are infrastructure to the design process and lack of fonts is one of the main challenges we as designers.
