About

About me
My name is Alex Bainter. I'm a web developer who likes to make stuff that usually involves sound and technology. Examples of web apps I've built include Generative.fmCorruption Loops, and Blossom. Generative.fm is by far my most popular project, and the one most Patrons are interested in.

What is Generative.fm?
Generative.fm is an open source platform for playing generative music in the browser. It's a collection of systems which generate pieces of music which neither end nor repeat. The site currently features systems which generate endless ambient, minimal music. The site is completely free for everyone and doesn't feature advertising.

How I use Patreon
I like to release my work for free — completely free, with no "pay-to-unlock" features or anything like that. However, good web hosting is not free. Most sites feature third-party advertising to provide income, but we both know how much that sucks. I use Patreon instead. Every month I post the cost of hosting Generative.fm here on Patreon under "Goals." I also share my current monthly Patreon income publicly.

I think sharing the costs and income of Generative.fm enables you to make an informed decision about whether or not you should support it. If the costs are consistently higher than the income, it's not sustainable for me to keep the site up. Otherwise, you can see for yourself how much I'm profiting from the project. In return for support, Patrons get to influence new features on the site and receive exclusive updates about what I'm working on.

As the income from Patreon grows, I'll also be able to add features which were previously cost-prohibitive, like streaming or adding Generative.fm support to Alexa and Google Home.
