Always Crashing Magazine is creating a literary magazine, online & print

Always Crashing is a print and online magazine of fiction, poetry, and nameless things around and in-between. We are interested in surfaces and form, publishing works that seek something via untruth, fantasy, artificiality, the plastic, deep superficiality, and attention to their own construction. We are interested in work that strikes curious poses; in the “experimental,” not as an avant-garde, but as a furthering of a subterranean literary tradition. We are interested, ultimately, in the aesthetic: the beautiful and the sublime, sure, but also the boring, the dumb, the merely interesting, the zany, the disgusting, the cute—particularly when pushed into strange and unfamiliar territories.

Always Crashing pays authors published in our print edition, and we don't charge reading fees to people submitting work. We are an independent magazine stubbornly committed to keeping print alive without institutional funding, and we strive to make our publication accessible to all, both for readers and authors. By becoming a patron of Always Crashing, you will help us pay for web hosting, printing costs, and author payments so that we can continue publishing the most exciting work today without compromises.

Always Crashing was founded in 2017 and is creating a space for experimental literature in print and online. When we launched, we did so after many long months and deep conversations about the literary landscape. So many print magazines were closing up shop, so many outlets for innovative work had been shuttered, so much had disappeared without a trace. Always Crashing was created out of a drive to resurrect something, maybe, or to add to the spaces that made us excited to write, read, and submit work in the first place. We're a small but dedicated staff—two editors in Pittsburgh and one in Chicago—all working on a volunteer basis, out of love for the work we're publishing.

We publish one print issue per year and feature online content year-round.
