Who I am/What I do:

I am a news reporter with 27 years’ experience covering healthcare, political, and social justice issues. I’ve devoted a bulk of the last two decades to ever-increasing coverage of the myriad issues surrounding untreated serious mental illness – its root causes, and the direct and indirect damage it inflicts on individuals and communities across California and the nation.

When you back amyyannelloreports, you’re backing reporting that takes you into the heart of such issues as California’s Laura’s Law; Proposition 63 and the Mental Health Services Act; mental illness, homelessness; and the criminal justice system; national mental health reform legislation; domestic violence; substance abuse; and AIDS, in publications throughout California, including the San Francisco Chronicle and Sacramento News & Review.

By supporting my work on Patreon, you'll be directly invested in the truth "getting out there" about such topics as: Mental health parity and the Affordable Care Act (or: when "access" is in name only); and an investigation into California's competency restoration process, to name but two reporting projects in the works, awaiting support.

With the possible exceptions of mass shootings and officer-involved shootings, most in the statewide media increasingly choose to dismiss routine analysis and investigative pieces regarding issues surrounding untreated mental illness and the nation’s broken mental health system when making their daily news budgets.

At amyyannelloreports we aim to elevate the discussion and bring you the story-behind-the-story -- the story no one else is telling -- via interviews that outweigh anything you’ll find on any other media outlets (if they’re even covering the story!)

I've been blessed with some of the best sources in the business, from all walks of life: people with serious mental illness and their family members; physicians and nurses; members of law enforcement and other "first-responders;" clergy; teachers; judges, DAs and public defenders; therapists; psychiatrists and neurologists; elected officials and lobbyists; activists, and so many others. This alone puts me ahead of the game when it comes to putting the news of the day into context for you. Add to this my depth and breadth of experience in covering the myriad issues surrounding untreated mental illness over the last two decades, and my desire to explore solutions that communities across the nation are devising to deal with the brokenness of America's mental health system, and I believe I'm uniquely qualified to bring you news you won't find anywhere else.

To do that, and to continue bringing you fresh content, I need your support. My expenses include travel costs, records fees, web hosting, and, most of all, my time. Bringing this site to you is the equivalent of a full-time job, and I need your help to make this project sustainable and expand and improve the work I do here.

amyyannelloreports is: Myself; my walking “AP Style Guide” of a copy editor Johna M. Rush, and all-things-visual (because I’m not) photo editor Cynthia E. Jones. I could not successfully produce these stories without them. They have my undying gratitude.

Back my work and I'll give you stories guaranteed to make you think, make you feel, make you question, sometimes even make you angry. But always, they will strive to leave you more well-informed than you were before, and, hopefully, better able to navigate the world around you.

Thanks for supporting our efforts to bring you #Journalismthatmatters!

Warm regards,

Amy
