Hi, I'm Andy. You probably know me as one half of XOXO, an experimental festival for independent artists who work on the internet. Previously I organized Build, and published The Manual, both for designers who work on the internet.

Why are you on Patreon?

Event production is a creative practice, but not one that is particularly well understood.

Events have the potential to inspire and excite, impart knowledge and encourage deeper discourse, and conjure communities around shared values. At their best, they include and make welcome as many people as possible. Great events are products of good design, and as such, require extensive planning, collaboration, and organization.

When I speak with friends about the level of orchestration that goes into creating an event like XOXO, they always want to know more. So I want to share the process of producing events, and use Patreon as a platform to do so.

Where will my money go?

Thanks to this Patreon, I’m launching a podcast—Assemble. I'll be speaking with other producers and organizers about the complexities of managing events, but also with other people who build and maintain communities as part of their work.

Your support will also allow me to experiment with my own event ideas. I have a long list (which includes a number of one-day conferences, film screenings with live scores, a science lecture series, and some gallery shows), and with your support, I can make these a reality.

In return, I'll share my unique insight into how I pull all of these events together. I'll write essays about various aspects of event production, and share what goes on behind the scenes.

(You'll also be giving me the freedom to work with more community organizations and nonprofits. Your support will allow me to volunteer my time, and help support the existence of more quality, inclusive, sustainable events in the world!)

If you pledge at $2+ per month, you'll gain access to those essays here on Patreon. At $5+ per month, you'll also gain early access to advance ticket sales* and video / audio from shows and performances I produce. At $10+ per month, you'll be directly contributing to the cost of producing and hosting the podcast. And at $100+ per month, you'll be become a Community Sponsor of the podcast where I'll credit you alongside the other sponsors.

Many of you are here because you're part of a community that has grown around an event I've worked on in the past, and quite a lot of you have asked for ways to further support my work.

This is a weird job. But it's a job that I deeply enjoy, that I'm good at, and that I always want to do more of. I am eternally thankful for your support, and encourage you to join me as I speak more openly and honestly about this work.

Thank you.
