Arcade Fire Cover

Heyo, Decided to roll with a newer classic this time around. It was supposed to be a super mellow cover, but I was having fun with some new toys, and it turned into something a little different. Hope you like it! On a related note, I see now that the decision to call my Bandcamp collection "Demos" was decidedly lacking in foresight. Live and learn, you guys. In any case, thanks as always for listening and supporting my work. You make me the happiest camper. Lauren

Behind-The-Scenes: Sun Studio Sessions for PBS

I first visited Sun Studio back on the initial TFDI tour with Jay Nash and Matt Duke. Jay had recorded a Session some time ago and had made nice with the guys there. we were passing through Memphis and he managed to get us our very own private tour of the place. well, fast forward 6 years... (damn, it's been 6 YEARS ALREADY!!) and turns out my son has a friend in his class who's dad is the current owner of Sun. (what are the odds??) it certainly didn't take long to connect the dots and eventually get a session of my own on the books. this past weekend me and the family went to Memphis where I was finally able to record at the legendary Sun Studio. the shoot was the first of season 7 for them and thus it won't air until probably this time next year! (though that seems like a lifetime away, I'm sure it'll be here before you know it.) in the meantime, I put together this little clip of the shoot, some of the gear and a full length performance of "Sweat It Out" from the new record. this was an amazing experience and one I couldn't wait to share with you guys. hope you dig it! -TL

alright y'all, here it is: the first half of the Paint A Picture Tour. some random moments, some deep thoughts and of course, plenty of laughs. we have had a blast out here though that's not to say it hasn't been a ton of work. there have been a lot of long drives, early morning radio and tv visits and plenty of late shows. we had an absolute blast with Castle Creek and wish them nothing but the best on the road ahead. check them out if you haven't already. stray tuned for Part 2 of this crazy ride. should be plenty more shenanigans to ensue. cheers! -TL

this footage was taken from the first week's worth of radio, TV and internet appearances we made during the first week of the Paint A Picture Tour. thought some of you might enjoy seeing just how many times an artist will performa a song in any given week of touring and promoting a record. in fact, there were other performances that week, however, not all of them were recorded for some reason or another. and of course there were roughly 8 or 9 live performances of the song that week too. crazy! hope you dig it! -TL

Happy Mother's Day!

It was one year ago today that my Kickstarter campaign was more than fully funded. to say that it was one of the single most encouraging experiences in my career is putting it extremely lightly. that, in addition to the love and inspiration you guys continue to provide, have made this one of the most memorable chapters in my career. that said, one of the reward incentives for the Kickstarter campaign was me writing original songs for almost a dozen backers. I thought that it might be a good time to share with you one of the songs from this collection. it's called "Mother's Loving Heart" and was inspired by a fan's effort (along with his wive's of course) to get pregnant for their second child. it's ultimately a song for his wife who eventually DID get pregnant and has since had a beautiful baby boy. I thought this would be the perfect Mother's Day post to share with you guys. I hope you enjoy the song and this rather modest performance, recorded by Keaton Simons in a hotel room in South Lake Tahoe while on The Paint A Picture Tour. I do in fact have plans to properly record ALL of the songs I wrote as rewards for this campaign. I think you guys are going to enjoy them. Happy Mother's Day to all the beautiful Mothers out there. I hope it's a lovely one. -TL

the tour pressed on from Iowa into the wild west. we saw Denver, Vegas, Tahoe, San Fran, LA, Phoenix, El Paso, Austin, Dallas before heading back through the midwest to wrap things up. things get a little nutty when the drives start averaging 8-10 hours. you start to realize you are in fact a long way from home and that touring probably isn't for everybody. we had a ball out west and think you can see that in this video. as always, thanks to everyone who made it out to these shows and made the drives more than worth it! enjoy! -TL

Green Room Sessions: "Drawing Board" - Downstairs Live

last summer I included some footage from one of my all-time favorite venues in the country, Downstairs Live. it's basically one of the most elaborate house concerts you'll ever see. the hosts, Chuck and Heather have created an 85-seat venue in their basement and have opened their doors to some of the best singer songwriters of the past 15 years. I am honored to have become a member of this wonderful family having now played the room 4 separate times.

I was running through my set list and was playing through some songs I hadn't played in awhile. "Drawing Board" was one of them. as I was looking up at the walls of the guest room, I thought I might put together a little video for you guys, showing you just how many incredible artists have played this amazing venue over the years. should be some rather familiar names in there for most of you.

So I recorded this song in the bathtub with the back of my parlor guitar pressed up against the tub to amplify the sound. This is definitely one of those songs that'll sound better on headphones than on a laptop.

Lyrics:

What are we doing here

My body it aches and toils

And my soul is restless for tomorrow

Wringin' out all my fear

Oh what are we waiting for

Don't you dare say it'll be easier tomorrow

I could lose everything

And I probably will

Everything but my faith in you

Countin' up all my Kings

Security can't be bought

It can only be bargained for tomorrow

And girl you ain't worth a thing

Except what your hand has caught

So don't you wait for it to be given to you tomorrow.

Frank Monaco I got the strangest feeling watching and hearing this. Not only are you done up a little like Marilyn Monroe, but the lyrics could very well have reflected her last thoughts. Okay, maybe I'm projecting too much into this, but I go there sometimes. Bottom line: I like it. Thumbs up (without accidentally plucking a guitar string - LOL)

Battle Of The Voices - Niagara Falls, Canada

So, most of you know that I went up to Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada this summer to perform as part of a show called the "Battle Of The Voices." it was actually a ton of fun, albeit quite a bit of work. now, I figure since I'm always talking to you guys about what I do all the time and what life as an artist is like for me, I thought I might take the opportunity to let a couple other artists tell you what life after reality TV is like for them. I was able to pin down both Josh Logan and Bria Kelly to ask them some questions about their time on their respective shows and some of the things the realized along the way. turns out, Bria is and has been a TFDI fan for some time now. her realization of who was actually in TFDI is rather priceless.

I hope you guys dig the insight they provide as well as the inadvertent hiatus from all things TL. your regularly scheduled program will resume soon enough.

Love you guys! thanks for tuning in...

Behind The Music - YOU Decide "Frame By Frame"

OK! So our wining phrase came from none other than my good friend and dedicated Patron, the Lovely Miss Jayme Brown. (a.k.a. J. Dawg!) her phrase was "my heart was yours for the breaking". now, this took a little longer than I had expected but in all fairness I have been in 2 countries, countless states and various shades of foggy since we announced the winner. that said, I feel this is one of the stronger songs I've written in awhile and simply can't get it out of my head. hopefully the same goes for you.

BIG thanks to everyone who participated in this and contributed a phrase. thank you to those of you who voted. every piece of this helps create the final product and hopfully that's what you guys enjoy most about the Extravaganza. God knows it's what's got my feet held to the fire. ;)

Love you guys. Enjoy this one. I'm pretty proud of it.

Don Wow! Beautiful, haunting melody and song. A favorite already. But besides the song... the video production is incredible. You do the creative jobs of an entire TV studio team - and well. This is a perfect entry to the Extravaganza, thanks. BTW, I recently spent a lotta time on I-40 East... but mostly all I got out of it was a sore butt. :-)

Rachel Levitin DUDE! The melody for the vocal line in the chorus is some strong stuff, love the phrasing. Strong lyrics here too. Diggin' this tune for sure. I hear it being super chill while still rocking with the full band to support it.

Never Coming Back - Acoustic Demo

Here's a little ol' fashioned folk song I wrote this week. Fun fact: I'm wearing those sunglasses because of an eye infection (gross.) Not because I'm too cool for school. Well, that too. But mainly my eye looks bad.

Hope you enjoy...

sara fosdick Nataly---the drama you have created with your songs, starting in January with 'waiting room' --yes--the drama is immense--it works to the point where quite a few people have been able to get through horrible lost love breakups just by listening to your words and music. You wrote us all an update along with the song 'haze' that i don't need to repeat here---and you've followed that plan in your writing to this final song. Which seems very final indeed. And you can read where people are so convinced by your performances that they are asking in comments--wait--what? What's going on? --to this song where we hear you say you are 'never coming back'. All these songs seem so deeply heart felt and convincing. They work. They work so brilliantly until now--with this final song you actually don't come back right away to answer your patron's praises. So now people wonder--not coming back to--oh no--or not coming back--maybe-- to US ? You have brilliantly followed out your plan. The songs this year will make an incredible 'side 1' for your album---and your patrons and followers on youtube are left in suspense. Is she gone? My god--tell us! And i have got to say--if you keep going the way you are--this album will have a heart pulse pounding louder than any poem by edgar allan poe. --leaving the question---where is there to go from being gone? i think we'll all stick around for 'side 2'

sara fosdick are you actually as brilliant as i said above? keep us wondering--it works

August 2, 2015 16:50:39 · Reply

sara fosdick --these songs you have written project a lot of pain and loss. If the pain is as real as you write--i hope you have purged it by the actual writing of these songs. We all hope that, Nataly.

Nataly Dawn I don't know how much you actually purge with song writing. If the problem isn't dealt with in real life it doesn't really matter how much you sing about it.

"Frame By Frame" (for reals!)

I know most of you saw the video from last month of me putting together my new song, "Frame By Frame". (if you haven't, do check it out when you can!) I realized though that the audio of that video was somewhat compromised in that the vocal was recorded while I was driving, the guitar was recorded in a hotel room and although I was able to piece them together, I felt maybe I should give you guys a clean version, start to finish, not just as a video but as an MP3 as well. I cracked out the old Blue Snowball mic and recorded this in the home office today. I've attached the MP3 for you guys to download as well. I really am fond of this tune and look forward to performing it live out on tour next month.

please do share this link with others, continue to help spread the word about the Duty-Free Rock Star Extravaganza. I really do feel that the more folks tuning in, the merrier.

thanks y'all!

Berneal Sutherland Loved it from the beginning, but love it even more now that I don't have to worry about you crashing or getting pulled over. Who's idea was it to film the "almost candid" parts? They should get mucho kudos.

Don I def love this tune. The melody, the finger picking, the lyrics. And again the video is excellent... at least 3 cameras? Maybe 4? Zooming in and out. I expect you'll prob start putting some CGI or greenscreens in them soon, lol. :-)

So THANKS to Dave Retan (one of my patrons) for recommending that I cover a Kelly Clarkson tune! I took some liberties with this one. Hope you enjoy. And I'm still keeping all y'all's recommendations in mind for future covers, while I work on the new album :D

Nataly Dawn Thanks Kenneth. Jack likes to argue that the only difference between a Kelly Clarkson song and an Elliott Smith one is production. I think that's a bit of a stretch, but he scores a point on this one.

sara fosdick BTW i had an old chic band mate come from out of town yesterday and i was playing your solo work through my media room--no video--just the music. We talked a few minutes till she finally said--"Sara, Dude--Who is this incredible voice ?! Give me that thumb drive to drive back to austin with--i'll buy her album when i get home." She knew nothing of you or pomplamoose or patreon--so of course i educated her of your solo career. another BTW -- i heard you mention ART GARFUNKEL'S 'break away' album. I grew up on his harmonies thanks to my omniscient dad. Art has about 9 solo albums if you don't know---the best is 'watermark' --the entire album is full of songs written by JIMMY WEBB. But i am partial to 'breakaway' songs---'i only have eyes for you' and 'disney girls'. Dad is happy with full memory back now btw. If you don't know who Jimmy Webb is then you should do something about that !

it's been a relatively short tour but a really fun and unforgettable one as well. me and the boys rallied on through the southeast making stops in Chapel Hill, Charlotte, St. Pete, Gainesville and Orlando before heading up to the Rock By The Sea festival on St. George Island. I was able to capture some pretty funny moments and string them together for you guys. I hope you dig it!

You may recognize Carlos Cabrera from our Superman's Song collaboration or if you've seen Pomplamoose play live. He's a great drummer, and one of my best friends. He also works at Patreon now as their head data analyst (such a smart kiddo...) Anyhow, he's one of my favorite people in the world, and I'm so so glad we got to drive around Sonoma, Marin and San Francisco filming these random objects. Such a great great day :)
