Hi. My name is Anthony James Williams, sometimes known as antho-knees. First of all: thank you for even considering becoming a patron. And thank you to the folks who currently support me or have supported me in the past.

Here's the tl;dr version*
I do a lot of intellectual and emotional labor for free, particularly online. I want to keep it free. However, I know many folks who have the means to contribute $50/month, $5/month, or $1/month for the labor it takes me to make the knowledge accessible for those with internet connections. That's all I'm asking for: compensation for labor. You can cancel at any time :)

Besides paying for labor, what do Patrons get?

  1. Thanks: Appreciation and gratitude from a Black queer nonbinary person by the name of Anthoknees.
  2. Humanity: Recognition that I am more than just tweets or articles, but a human doing work worthy of compensation.
  3. Joy: Warm fuzzy feelings inside from the knowledge that you're paying it forward.
  4. Publicity: Shoutouts on Twitter, if you so choose.
  5. Humor: Requests for me to write pieces like "rugby thighs save lives."
Any questions? Contact me at anthokneesplease AT gmail DOT com. Thank you!

Patreon works by supporting creators with a monthly contribution. I often write analysis and criticism rooted in my own lived experience as well as my own studies, both formal and informal. Much of the knowledge I learned came from folks like my mother, friends I know in person, women of color + femmes + non-binary +/ trans folks I've never met, things I read, and books on books on books on books. In an effort to pass on that knowledge and be publicly accountable for the mistakes I make, I often bypass approaching a publisher and just publish it for free online. This most often takes the form of a thread of tweets on Twitter or 800-2,500 word pieces on Medium.

And since we are dealing with money, transparency is important. I'm currently a fulltime student in a PhD program. They don't pay us a lot and I have family, debt, cost of living in Los Angeles, and a not-so-fun combination of depression and anxiety.

Traditional and non-traditional students have told me they've learned more about sociology from me (and the 9 damn years it took me to finish undergrad) than they did their professors. So if you're interested in compensating me for the daily work, you can do so here. Some notable examples include social media activism, student activism, $25 mil private prison divestment campaign, and co-creating the hashtags #MasculinitySoFragile & #BlackWomenDidThat. More examples of my work include:
  1. Writing, poetry, adaptation, and editing (formerly with the Afrikan Black Coalition)
  2. Researching (as a graduate student in a Sociology PhD program)
  3. Teaching (both formally and informally, online and off)
    1. Identity; how do Blackness, queerness, and gender mix?
    2. Mental health; how do depression, anxiety, and disability affect our daily lives?
    3. White supremacy and power; how do we organize against interlocking systems of power and how does "allyship" function as a verb?
    4. Politics; how are our lives inherently political, especially for folks who aren't just white, straight, cis, masculine, non-disabled, and American?

Tiers
Hazel London
$1 or more per month
Lissen. You a real one. If you keep this up, that $12 a year and that's a commitment. I appreciate this, no lie. If you want, hit my Patreon DMs and I'll shout you out on twitter.
Sunrays for Days
$5 or more per month
Ok, so you can get a shoutout on Twitter (DM and I got you) and a personal thank you note. If you contribute at this level then my face is probably looking like this dog looks right now.
Red Beanie Child
$10 or more per month
Ok, so you can get a shoutout on Twitter (DM and I got you), a personal thank you note, and something cute. What it gone be? What will the cute thing be? Hmm, I'ma give you a nice ass compliment. Like, a genuine compliment. Unless you're just a horrible person (sexist, racist, etc etc), in which case I'll just deny your scrilla :)
Woman with the Red Cup
$25 or more per month
So you tryna do $300 a YEAR? Alright, so lissen. In addition to the rewards from previous tiers, after contributing for three months you get a thread on twitter about your topic of choice, within reasonable boundaries. Again, if you're asking me to spew some hateful stuff or something I have no knowledge of? I won't do it.
Proud Podium Man
$50 or more per month
Liiiiisssen. This works out to $600 a year and I just can't even. You get all the previous rewards AND if you contribute $50/month for three months, then you're paying for a personal consultation. This means 30 mins of emotional or intellectual labor for each month after (to be used by the end of the calendar month; no rollover labor, y'all).
Ed-Edd-and-Eddy Nervous Sweat
$100 or more per month
This is $100/month, which would be $1,200 a year. So this is a serious "I want to support you and I want some individual labor from you." That means you get all the previous rewards AND after three months of contributions this becomes thirty minutes of labor [a conversation and/or advice] for each month after (to be used by the end of the calendar month; no rollover labor, y'all).
Goals
85% complete
Surpassing my previous goal was beyond my wildest dreams. With this current goal met I have been able to put away some savings as I began my transition to graduate school at UCLA in Fall 2017, plus I can pay it forward with monthly donations to folks who are Black, queer, trans, disabled, undocumented, and/or marginalized in other ways.

At least $0.25/word for 800-1200 word pieces, that equates to $200-$300 per piece, so this goal covers 3 pieces and the free labor on twitter.
