I'm a PhD student in neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania, and I study the neuronal circuitry underlying anxiety and addiction. One of my goals is to try bringing people closer to the science they fund through their tax dollars via regular discussions on Periscope.

For the past 2.5 years, I've been using Periscope, Twitter's video live-streaming platform, to communicate topics in neuroscience and biology in real time via mobile devices. While impromptu live-streams have been very engaging, I've recently been attempting to produce higher quality coverage of specific topics via broadcasts from a computer. However, my computer has recently had its 7th birthday - and, despite internal upgrades, has reached its computational limits and has become a bottleneck to quality.

Any contributions will be allocated towards acquiring better equipment with which I can improve the quality and frequency of audio & video productions, and are deeply appreciated.
Goals

In the U.S., approximately a third of all research is funded publicly through tax-funded grants.  However, for tax-payers to have access to the publications that result from the work they fund, there's an additional expense they must pay to read the resulting articles.  This is called the 'paywall'.  With the podcast and enriched live-stream interactions, I intend to reduce this separation between scientists and their funders.
