Hey all, my name is Chelsea Vowel, and I'm a Métis mother, educator and writer from Lac Ste. Anne, Alberta, currently living in Edmonton. I am a full-time grad student at the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta, looking at developing some best practices for scaffolding Cree language literacy resources. I am also working full time, supporting our family of 4 while being unreasonably pregnant (due in May!).
I blog on a variety of Indigenous issues at âpihtawikosisân.com, I co-host the Indigenous sci-fi podcast Métis In Space (which you can find on the Indian and Cowboy Media Network), I produce and host the Unsettling Your Language podcast, and I run the @IndigenousXca twitter account, which features a new Indigenous host each week! I also once made a video game called Idle No More: Blockade (download here), and I would love to create more interactive content like that in the future! I am also trying to work on a collection of Métis-centric speculative fiction short stories that I'd love to eventually get published sometime next year. I just have to get my pesky MA thesis out of the way :D
I don't get paid to do any of these things, and in fact the cost to continue writing, podcasting and developing other resources for on-and-offline Indigenous communities, is fairly high.
If you make use of the content I create, and you'd like to see more of it, I'm hoping you'll pledge a small amount (or large if you're mega-rich) every month to keep things going! Your monthly financial support would go towards:
- technical supplies (microphones, sound-mixing apps, etc.)
- website hosting
- the Métis In Space soundcloud account
- expanding the production of Cree-language literacy resources
