Hey all, my name is Chelsea Vowel, and I'm a Métis mother of six, educator and writer from Lac Ste. Anne, Alberta, currently living in Edmonton. I am a full-time grad student at the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta, and a full time curriculum coordinator.

I am a public intellectual, writer, and educator whose work intersects language, gender, Métis self-determination, and resurgence. Cohost of Indigenous feminist sci-fi podcast Métis in Space and author of Indigenous Writes: A Guide to First Nations, Métis & Inuit Issues in Canada, I blog at apihtawikosisan.com, run the @IndigenousXca twitter account, tweet from @apihtawikosisan and make legendary bannock. Auntie-approved!

What I'm doing: If it's not generative, I don't want it

I spend a lot of time speaking to settlers about Indigenous issues, trying to debunk myths, and address stereotypes and it's draining as heck. I am trying to shift my focus and energy towards the future, near, far, unfathomably distant; all from a Métis perspective rooted in my community and experiences.

Most of all, I want to give you an advance peek of my Métis futurisms speculative fiction as well as some non-fiction work! The work I'm putting up here is one of the following:

  1. already published, but not available online, or without purchasing the publication it's in;
  2. slated to be published, but far enough away from now that I can't wait to give folks an advance look;
  3. something I'm working on, and will eventually pitch for publication if it doesn't suck.

If you enjoy my writing, or make use of the other content I create, and you'd like to see more of it, I'm hoping you'll pledge a small amount (or large if you're mega-rich) every month to keep things going! Your monthly financial support would go towards:

  • technical supplies (microphones, sound-mixing apps, etc.) for podcasting
  • website hosting
  • the Métis In Space soundcloud account
  • dry meat to keep me alive while I write
(Keep in mind this site takes almost 10% of what is pledged!)j

Many thanks!

This is actually so awesome! If I could get all my Twitter followers to donate this much, I'd be able to quit my job and work full time on writing, podcasting! Thank you!

Awesome sauce! Skipping some tasty, hot, caffeinated beverage once a month to support my work is big time appreciated!
Skip a greasy take-out lunch

You're basically a superstar, denying yourself a plate of hot, greasy noodles or a burger combo once a month! I loooooooove food, so I count this as no small sacrifice!
Skip a decent take-out meal

Who's a badass? You're a badass! You've just skipped the cost of a really good cactus pear martini and a bowl of truffle-drizzled mushroom soup!
