The spiraling cost of medical care shapes people’s lives: The jobs we’re afraid to leave because of insurance, the risk that a trip to the doc could end in bankruptcy. It’s not healthy.

This is my story too, and that’s why I’m making this podcast. An Arm and a Leg aims to be entertaining, empowering—even useful. I'm a reporter who's worked with outlets like NPR, Marketplace, 99 Percent Invisible and Planet Money—so I bring my skill at finding and telling revealing, surprising stories.

But the project’s big focus, since I’m in this mess too, is connecting and problem-solving, together.

You are not alone. We may be screwed, but we’re together. And if we want to get even a little bit less-screwed, we need each other. If nothing else, we can be good company to each other.
  • We can have a good, dark laugh.
  • We can offer each other empathy.
  • We can sing hilarious punk-rock campfire-songs of rage at whoever turns out to be responsible.

And YOU have a role to play in making it happen.
There's no institution behind this show. Our World Headquarters is the three-season sun porch behind my son's bedroom.

I need to pay my kick-ass collaborators—the editor who makes the show actually good, the audio engineer who makes it sound good, the consulting producer who helps guide our vision, and other folks who make this whole thing possible.

These people are GREAT, and they all have rent to pay, groceries to buy and... medical bills. I'm gonna need some dough too, to keep the space heater running here in the World Headquarters.

So come on in. There'll be rewards, including bonus audio—stuff like an ad-free version of our stream, and maybe some bonus interviews, fun stuff that didn't quite fit a story we made.

(The core stuff, the stories we produce and the info we dig up? That's all public and 100 percent free, for everybody. This whole thing is about sharing, everybody lifting each other up. Kumbaya, y'all.)

And there are other rewards—have I mentioned the Arm and a Leg Band-Aids?

Check it out. And thank you for making this show possible!
