  • I know how to help them and where to start.
  • I am going to DO THIS THING but it's only possible with your help
  • You get fun rewards for contributing
  • Pledging a micro-amount per creation (1-2 stories/month) is easy and exciting
  • Set monthly maximums for zero-work, feel-good contributions that makes you happier than splurging on a double-cheeseburger with extra pickles

NOTHING WILL CHANGE UNTIL WE CAN SEE IT

We are revealing the invisible work of raising families in extraordinary circumstances - because when we are able to see, we are able to take action.

DO-GOODERY, YOU SAY?

I'm currently working on two Do-Goodery projects, with more planned for next year.

Invisible Obstacles
explores the invisible work, judgement, and difficulties of families who navigate hurdles related to illness, adoption, neurodiversity, LGBQT issues, and single-parenthood. There are three Invisible Obstacles sessions scheduled to be published in 2016 addressing single-parenthood, PTSD, ADHD, debt, immigration, and chronic illness.

Somewhere Out There often coordinates with the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange and DCF to reveal the urgent need for support, resources, and foster and adoptive homes for the 8,000 children in foster care in Massachusetts alone.

Maternity Leave Without Fail (TBD - with your help!)  will address the myths and misunderstandings of how paid maternity leave affects the US economy, how our fear of maternity discriminates women long before pregnancy, and the undue financial and mental burdens women face when choosing to start a family. It doesn't have to be this way - let's make the effects of our broken corporate culture and government policies clear so we can start repairing them.

THIS ISN'T ABOUT THEM. IT'S ABOUT US.

Social photography documentaries are powerful, and the work of documentary photographers has already improved your life in ways you might not realize. Photographs motivated the public to create child labor laws protecting children during the industrial revolution. It spread the 1963 children's crusade across the nation, opening the eyes of the privileged to the fight for civil rights. Photographs inspire compassion for those who need help and have become one of the most effective instruments of humanitarianism.

Our society is only as strong as our weakest members. At some point in your life - you will face your own hurdles. My hope is that by that time, the compassion and understanding is there for you when you need it most.

WHY DO I NEED YOUR HELP?

Life doesn't have to be so hard for millions of families, and creating perspective and fostering compassion is a vital step on the path to change. That's why I'm going to do this work no matter what.

The trouble is, these documentaries are expensive - and I have my own family to support. Each documentary I create takes 40-60 hours to interview, capture, edit, process, and write. I work hard to keep my software and gear expenses low, performing all of my administrative, IT, and menial tasks on my own - but the limited funds I collect from private commissions are just enough to cover the costs of creation and childcare for my two sons while I work.

Many of you want to see more of these stories, and continuations to the ones I've already published. Some of you would love to see bonus material and learn about ways to help more. So now that I've poured my savings into the do-goodery projects of 2016, we'll use Patreon to help us move forward.

THE SIMPLIEST WAY TO HELP

Unlike Kickstarter, you don't need to contribute a huge donation and hope for the best. Patreon allows you to contribute a micro-donation only after I've created a documentary. This means your support is guaranteed to make an impact, and it helps me buffer my expenses while I create the next thought-provoking, heart-melting, feeling-all-the-feels story for you to enjoy. Plus you get stuff!

The best part? This can be an imperceptible micro-contribution. Tailor a set of awesome rewards to fit any budget - even the 1$ level gets access to an exclusive patron-only feed and direct notifications when I publish new work.

Stay comfy: I usually publish between 1-2 stories each month, and you can create a maximum cap so even if I go nuts and publish 4+ at once, you'll never exceed your chosen budget.

Patreon is a way to support creators so we can keep doing what we do. If you believe these issues need to be addressed and fixed, please help me give a voice to the families who feel alone and voiceless. If you want to learn how to be more compassionate, to see the gratitude in families so you can find it in your own daily life, this is your opportunity.

If every reader who has been touched by my stories makes a micro-contribution of just $1/documentary, I can continue to create six eye-opening documentaries a year for less than the cost of a cup of terrible coffee. Contributors get access to my patron-only feed and an exclusive quarterly email update.

If every reader who has had one of my stories impact their day contributes only $3/documentary, I can increase the number of documentaries I create, and start a series on the failures of our US maternity leave system for less than the cost of a poorly-assembled burrito. Plus, it helps those who can't afford the $1 feel a little better.

If every reader who has commented, shared, or emailed me about how much a documentary has touched them donates only $5/documentary, I can stop spending all of my time searching for families to hire me for commissioned work and dedicate my efforts full-time to social advocacy documentaries for less than the cost of a solar-powered dancing novelty cat.

If every reader who believes that what I do matters  donates $10/documentary, I can afford to pay my mortgage, buy groceries, and stop gluing my shoes back together when they fall apart for less than the cost of a goofy T-shirt of kittens farting rainbows.

If my bestest, most awesome friends donate $100/documentary, I can start publishing books, create gallery exhibits, and start public speaking events to reach a wider audience (re: the powerful people who actually make and change laws and policies) for less than the cost of a collection of Parks & Rec DVDs. (Does anyone still use DVDs for TV shows?)

If you can't afford the $1 right now - I understand, I still like you! But if you can, it's an easy, automated reminder that you're here and I'm not shouting into a void. Your contribution does way more than cover the cost of gas to get to a session and replace corrupt memory cards - it motivates me to keep going and reassures me that these issues matter to you so I can focus without fear.

IF YOU AGREE THAT THESE ISSUES MATTER, SPEAK UP

Sometimes artistic work gets difficult - it inspires a ton of self-doubt. When I'm operating in the silent vacuum between sessions, I wonder if what I'm doing matters at all. Is it fair to my family to pay for childcare when I make less than the sitter does? Does anyone care about this issue, or should I be heading in another direction? Am I even a good enough photographer or writer to do justice to these issues? Your feedback helps me spend less time worrying and more time hustling - and that's why I'm inviting you to join me as a patron.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP

Contact me to learn about private commissions and book a Day in the Life session for your family. Any and all profits from your session will go directly into my do-goodery efforts.

Join me at Books for Littles on Facebook if you have a young child and want to learn about the best books for story time. I use affiliate links like the ones above (I was being sneaky!), so every time you click through one of the links I personally post and make a purchase on Amazon, a small commission goes directly into my do-goodery budget.

Or just bookmark this Amazon link (it's Amazon Smile compatible!). Start your your Amazon orders there and a portion of each and every order supports my work.

Subscribe to my email newsletter to get updates on blog posts and receive magical subliminal messages* about how awesome these projects are.

*Help wanted: Email magician who can do that.

I'm going to do this no matter what. But I'd love it if you joined me while we change the world.

Also: THANK YOU!

The families who invite me into their homes and share with honesty and hope, helpers who comment and share, and readers who invest time to learn about the stuff I make are all helping us move forward. It's patrons like you who make it possible for me to do anything at all. I am just like, WHOA, at the very thought that someone could be kind and amazing enough to support me while I do something I love and care about. You are one of my people, I appreciate you more than words can say.

Thanks for making these stories visible and changing the world.

TRIPLE-GREAT LEVEL AWESOME-ER!
You go above-and-beyond when you believe in something. I like that about you.

For less than the cost of a burrito, you Get Stuff! - Including ALL of the above-mentioned rewards. PLUS:
  • Exclusive Peek Images: I can't include all of the Vital Collection Images from every session in a single documentary, so many of these images (which I ADORE) have to be pared down to 5-15 of the most salient images. When you contribute $3/documentary, you get to see the entire Vital Collection (25-100 images) in the private slideshow I normally only send to the featured family. This slideshow is only live for 30 days, before it's wiped from the internet foreverrrrrr.
  • Mad Props: After we've righted every injustice (rough deadline: 2082), I'll be deploying my robot minions to take over every major museum in the world for a large-scale retrospective of my work. You can boast to your friends about how all of this was made possible with your support and you knew me before I was famous. They won't believe you - until they catch the wink and nod I send you as I blast by with my rocket boots.
I aim to publish 1-2 stories/month max, but you can cap your monthly contribution even if I decided to publish a ton of work at once.

HI-FIVE-R.
Well hell-o, you fantastic, amazing, spectacular supporter-of-all-things-awesome! I can see that you and I have some things in common, and I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

For less than the cost of a broken basket in a thrift shop, you Get Stuff! - Including ALL of the above-mentioned rewards. PLUS:
  • Exclusive Extra-BONUS-Peek Images: I don't have enough hours in a month to hand-polish all of the images I'd like to include in the Vital Collection, so I gently tone the ones I can't live without and add them to a Peripherals bonus pack, just so families can pick and choose any favorites. If you'd like to get an exclusive insider's peek at literally ALL of the images (the entire Vital Collection + Peripherals) from a documentary session this is your chance.
  • Print-Access: In addition to viewing the Vital + Peripheral collections, you get access to a private order gallery. This means you have the option of ordering archival prints of your favorite images from the entire collection. Hang them in your home and tell to your friends you've added an original Ashia Ray print to your fine-art collection. Watch them smile and clap enthusiastically as they pretend to know who that is.
I aim to publish 1-2 stories/month max, but you can cap your monthly contribution even if I decided to publish a ton of work at once.

GET-IT-DONE LIKE A BOSS
We're in the big leagues now, buddy. Welcome to the fold - where you gain the power to influence not just whether we change the world - but how.

For less than the cost of a novelty T-shirt you'll immediately regret, you Get Stuff! - Including ALL of the above-mentioned rewards. PLUS:
  • Sneak Previews: Sometimes (OK - always) I have a hard time trying to choose the most vital images for a publication. I spend a ton of time edit down stories to something that takes less than a week to read, and I'm forced to simplify a very complex set of relationships and obstacles into a single powerful theme. I could really use your input and perspective, and at this level of contribution, I can tell you really care about the stories we are creating. At this level, you get not only a sneak-preview of the images before they are published, but I'll solicit your feedback on which direction to head in when I'm at a crossroads.
  • Get Behind the Scenes: I head into each session with three main goals at the front of my mind. They differ for each family. At this level, you'll find out what my goals were, and how they changed throughout the session, and how they affected what and how I chose to photograph.
  • Also for fun: Get a PDF download of every single thing I googled in 2011 and the new edition for 2017, when I start the next iteration of that project. Our google searches tell us everything we need to know about what is important to us, who we are, and where we are in life. It's kind of like peeking into someone's medicine cabinet, except MORE LIKE PEERING INTO A SOUL.
  • Gratitude & Attribution: Every level of contribution gets a whole heap of gratitude, but you get attribution at the end of digital publications for each documentary you sponsor, along with a link to an organization that is important to you (keep it clean, though, you guys.)
I aim to publish 1-2 stories/month max, but you can cap your monthly contribution even if I decided to publish a ton of work at once.
Each and every bit counts, thank you ONE BILLION HUGS AND BEARS WEARING HATS AND PANTS for your support!
Goals
$3 of $300 per Documentary
I don't see anyone else addressing these issues. So I'm going to hustle hard no matter what - but once we've met our $300 goal, I'll know this is a thing and start directing my efforts away from private commissions and direct the bulk of my work toward do-goodery long-term.

Knowing you are standing with me lets me know I'm not insane to turn down private commissions in favor of social awareness.
