ASL Basics was created with the goal of offering free educational content to allow anyone the opportunity to learn sign language online. I am very grateful that so far we have been able to do just that. We have enabled thousands of people from dozens of countries to learn sign language on their own terms.

According to the National Institute on Deafness (NIDCD) as many as 3 of every 1,000 children are born with hearing loss and more than 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents.

Your support would mean that we could continue to produce free educational content to help parents communicate with their children, teachers communicate with their deaf students, or afford anyone the opportunity to learn sign language and be a part of the community.

For your generous support, you will receive some special benefits here on Patreon, such as exclusive access to our full patron-only feed. This includes posts such as effective learning strategies, tips on how to speed up your progress in any language, behind the scenes content, early access to our lessons, and more. On top of that, you also get a discount on any of our merch.

* Access to patron-only posts

* Early access to videos

* 10% discount on merch

Your additional support would mean that we would be able to not only continue our work in creating regular educational videos, but we would be able to create even more avenues of learning.

For example, we would be able to create more videos and lessons that are more specific to people needs, such as videos for teachers, students, or families.

We would also be able to things such as publishing a book, create more comprehensive courses, and even specialized content for those that are wanting to go into the field of interpreting.

All benefits of this tier are listed below.

* Your name in description of videos

About Chris Gorges

My name is Chris Gorges and both my wife and I have been involved in the sign language community for over 10 years and we are currently working as a certified sign language interpreters in California.

Over the years, I have given over 100 public discourses at dozens of venues, worked with students of all ages and all grade levels in education, and have had the privilege helping others attain fluency in ASL and help train other interpreters to become more skilled at their craft.

More recently, I have had the pleasure of helping thousands of people learn sign language online with easy to follow lessons, encouraging interviews, and tips on how to overcome the challenges that come with learning another language.

I do this because I believe that everyone should have access to free quality educational videos that can enable them to learn sign language on their own terms. This is important because so many people find themselves in the need to learn sign language so they can communicate with those that are hard-of-hearing or deaf.

For example, according to the National Institute on Deafness (NIDCD), as many as 3 in 1,000 children in the United States are born with hearing loss and 90% of these children are born to hearing parents. Many of these parents of course are already working full-time jobs and juggling multiple responsibilities. Having access to free educational content that they can use on their own time is vital in forming of a means of communication with their children.

Of course parents are not the only ones that find themselves in need of learning sign language. I work with teachers everyday that are struggling to learn sign for their deaf students that are a part of their classroom so they can have a direct line of communication with them. Other students as well take it upon themselves to learn sign language so they can communicate with their deaf peers.

With your support I will be able to continue to make the high-quality educational content I produce available for free to anyone that needs them. Thank you so much for showing interest in the deaf community and both my wife and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity.
Goals
$228 of $500 per month
When this goal is reached, I will be able to have the resources to create more specific videos for teachers and parents with deaf and hard of hearing children.

In the United States, there are nearly 200,000 deaf children in public schools. Many teachers are at times blindsided with having a deaf student as a part of their classroom and often times feel overwhelmed with the added expectations placed upon them.

I have spent years interpreting for dozens of schools with a wide range of students, teachers, and administrations. Attaining this goal would allow me to create more specific content that could provide much needed support to our amazing teachers in our schools as well as the parents of these children.
