About ASPECCASPECC (Alberta Sex Positive Education and Community Centre) is a nonprofit corporation in Edmonton that was founded by local individuals who are passionate about creating a sex positive and inclusive community for marginalized groups.
SEX POSITIVE is a term to reflect a positive set of values, beliefs and attitudes regarding sexual activity, sexuality and sexual health education. As a sex positive organization we believe that everyone has the right to gather in spaces that are SAFE(R), and to have access to shame free education regarding sex, sexuality, gender and sexual health.
ASPECC is passionate about fostering sex positive values in our communities. To this end we facilitate a wide variety of events and learning opportunities to demystify sex, gender and sexuality, as well as to create spaces that are supportive to those individuals and groups who are vulnerable to discrimination and harassment due to their gender, sexuality, lifestyle or other marginalizing characteristics.
ASPECC promotes sex positive values through community awareness projects and community engagement programming (see our ASPECC Communities Proposal for more information). This particular project focuses on Rainbow Youth (Persons under the age of 25 who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, gender queer, queer, intersex, asexual, questioning, pan-sexual, two-spirited etc).
Rainbow Youth Project
As part of our mission to promote sex positive values ASPECC offers space to youth who are gender variant and/or not heterosexual, to socialize, watch documentaries, engage in art projects and get involved in community awareness projects (if they choose to do so).
As part of this project there will be funds put aside for healthy (but fun) food, bus tickets and art supplies. ASPECC currently hosts a youth social every month, a youth open microphone night, a youth karaoke and monthly queer youth art clubs.
Social Spaces for Queer Youth
ASPECC hosts bi-monthly Rainbow Youth Socials with dances, documentary screenings, open mic poetry nights etc. ASPECC will also hold a quarterly documentary viewing and discussion group exclusive to queer youth and their guests.
