Athena Kim is a Korean painter living in San Francisco. Locally, her work has been shown at numerous galleries and exhibitions, including The Women's Building, Presidio Landmark, One7 Gallery, Public Glass, Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, The Troll House at Pier 26, the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department, the Upload Collective, University of San Francisco, North Beach Bauhaus, SPACES, and China Basin Landing in San Francisco (2016-present).
Kim’s abstract expressionism manifests and discharges complex feelings and body sensations. Her search to express profound emotion through painting culminates in her unique compositions of richly colored abstract images filling large canvases and explores gesture, line, shape, and color, evoking a feeling of contemplation and transcendence.

Artist Statement:
I aim for subjective emotional expression with particular emphasis on creative action painting through the playful and accidental application of media. My painting explores diverse styles and techniques emphasizing my liberty to convey attitudes and emotions through non-representational means. Seeking not to be constrained by technique, I favor large canvases where I find space to give spontaneous manifestation to the subconscious.
My work is dedicated to the belief that humans should treat one an other with nonviolence and compassion; and is further dedicated to the notion that humans and the earth are interdependent organisms. Much of my creativity springs from an ongoing process of interpreting years of trauma in integrated healing and facilitating post-traumatic growth as a survivor. I believe deeply, as an artist who survived trauma finding freedom and expression through painting, it is my calling to explore profound emotions and create artworks that evoke a feeling of contemplation and transcendence.
