Aubergine is the vision of two friends to empower autistic people through accessible environments and innovative working practices. Frankie and Selena, both diagnosed with autism as adults, came together through an active interest in equality and diversity, but also through a passion for food.

Only 15% of autistic adults in the UK are in full-time paid employment, and only 32% are in some kind of paid work. Aubergine aims to address this deficit by offering employment opportunities and training for fellow autistic adults, and generating best practice models which can be replicated in other work-forces. Evidence based research shows that when we make a business autism friendly, we actually end up making it people friendly: people communicate more effectively, are more comfortable in their job, and in turn give more back to the business.

Aubergine is run by an entirely autistic complement. Community involvement is integral to the success of Aubergine. We have built strong relationships with local charities, businesses and individuals, to develop new ways of highlighting autistic people's strengths and allowing them to thrive in the workplace. For the past two years we have collected a wealth of information from autistic people in the shape of formal surveys, online discussions and focus groups to help inform us with how to move forward with our projects. Autistic people have told us that many cafes and events are inaccessible to them because of challenges associated with autism, for example, the noise of the coffee machine, the brightness of the lights, and even the positioning of the seating. This means that many autistic adults miss out on accessing some of our most basic of amenities. Eventually, we want to work with architects and tech companies to create a model cafe environment, as a competitive high street brand, following which, we will develop a consultation and training company. But for year 1, we’re starting small.

We want Aubergine to be the sum of community effort and directly benefit autistic people. For this reason we have involved autistic web designers, t-shirt printers and skilled trades people. We’ll be using some of the latest technology to communicate with and manage our staff, with apps designed and developed by autistic people. Our business model is about finding solutions to enable autistic people to access and maintain employment, by designing a working environment where we can identify problems and solve them early on, or whereby commonly identified workplace issues are simply removed from the offset.

Aubergine cafe is our first major project, providing ethically sourced, nutritious and affordable food to local people in the wider community. Excess food will be offered to those who cannot afford it. The central location means that the cafe will benefit from the city centre footfall, and be accessible by public transport. We already have over 400 followers on Facebook, and an active social media presence. Because our menu is plant-based, we have a significant reach to those interested in healthier lifestyles, environmentalism, veganism and sustainable living. We intend to implement robust policies of outreach and inclusion, not only with the autistic community, but those with whom we identify also, such as LGBT+ and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups.

Selena has managerial experience in catering and support work with disabilities (with a focus on Autism), and Frankie's background is in analytics. We expect to run this initial project for 12 months, and once sustainable, then move onto a bigger premises, beginning the next stage of our project based plan: Diversifying our outreach and impact with a purpose built cafe environment, based on research we have found. This will also include an events schedule, a training programme for individuals and a consultation service for businesses.
