Who I Am.
I am a visual artist using all media but with a focus on drawing and sculpture (digital and analog.)
After studying sculpture in New York City, I moved to the Internet in 1995 and started my creative life with a website called Entropy8.com. I began a collaboration with Michaël Samyn in 1999 and changed url to Entropy8Zuper.org. Together we made art and design for clients and for an audience of websurfers (most notable is our weekly online performance Wirefire.) We founded independent studio Tale of Tales in 2003. Along with many wonderful collaborators over the years we made 8 videogames. A few of these projects (The Endless Forest, The Path, The Graveyard) had a proportionally large impact in the videogame world.
NOW...
We are transitioning Tale of Tales to be the home for ALL of our activities and interests.
Not just videogames but multimedia artworks, writing, fine art, creation writ large!
As part of that effort, I am doing this Patreon to be able to expand my activities.
What I'm Doing.
With your help I am hoping to take a lifetime of knowledge and make analog and digital artworks, do more research and present all of this to you. These presentations will take the format of a Blog, a series of Podcasts, and live Periscope broadcasts. At the beginning I will have a lot to figure out.
1.
Drawing.
Drawing is an activity I hold absolutely sacred. I think we have all drawn pictures from a young age and to me it is the primary language, the ultimate way of synthesizing input from a confusing world. Now I won't say I am the best at it... but I have striven over the past 5 years to give what talent I have my attention. I especially love drawing live: life drawing, alla prima painting, zbrush quicksketching, master copying in musea etc. I will be doing a lot more of this and as I do I will document the artworks seen, discover their context, and try to gain greater insight into the life of some of the greatest masterworks of art and architecture. I have done all of this in the past, but always in private, often as part of research and development for our videogame projects. Now I want to make drawings for their own sake. I may wish ultimately to sell what I create. But for now, I'm just concentrating on making things for you, as my patrons.
2.
Blogs, vlogs, and Periscopes.
I have always longed for the opportunity to talk more about interactive media and art history. I am planning to make mini-lectures and downloadable workshops in the spirit of talks I have given at schools and conferences, such as this one at IndieCade:
But that won't be all. Sometimes I may make a podcast which may be an interview with an interesting person I know or that I meet. I will try to talk to other artists, designers, visionaries and ordinary folks about their creative lives. A podcast could also be an exploration of sound, as I venture out into the world and bring back its noises as field-recordings.
I consider myself fortunate to live in a part of Europe with easy access to amazing cities and sights. I'm near Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne, London. And there is nothing I like better than traveling and going deep into museums and cultural sites. These travels along with the drawing and research activities above will become part of a blog that I will keep updated on my new website: Auriea.com.
In addition if you follow me on twitter, I will do occasional Periscope broadcasts to you live from whatever interesting place I find myself.
I look forward to this future! Help me. Join me.
