Hello! My name is Austin Meyer and I am a documentary filmmaker, photographer, and podcast host. My films and stories have been published by The Atlantic, National Geographic, The New York Times, POLITICO, and Slate among others.

I am from Santa Rosa, California and from a young age I developed a love for storytelling. In fifth grade I got in trouble and my teacher assigned me to write a 5-paragraph analytical essay explaining what happened. My mom, a former journalist, saw how upset I was and said, “It doesn’t have to be boring! Write a 5-paragraph story!” I wrote a story about a squirrel that got caught in an analogous situation that I did, and my teacher loved it. On that day, not even Momma Meyer would have predicted that Tony the squirrel would lay the foundation for a life defined by the pursuit of storytelling power and grace.

As a videographer at the Los Angeles Times I created quick-turn stories. As an IDEO storytelling fellow, I reported on the social-environmental impacts of hydropower dams along the Mekong River in Southeast Asia for Roads & Kingdoms and Slate.

Today I am editing a documentary film on infant and maternal healthcare that I shot in Zambia thanks to a grant from National Geographic.

Beyond the camera, microphone, and keyboard, I love sports, theatrical improv, and music! I played on Stanford University’s varsity men’s soccer team and now I run crazy distances in the mountains as an ultra-runner. I am cofounder of a creative consultancy Collective Capital where I teach storytelling and applied improvisation, I play mandolin, and I have lots of freckles.
