About Austin Walker

the below needs, uhhhh, updating badly. long and short: looking forward, I'm hoping to start some non-games, non-journalism writing projects, and may need your help to do it!!!

Hey Internet,

My name is Austin Walker, and first of all I wanna say thanks for checking out my Patreon page.

You might know me from some of the writing I’ve done over the last couple of years:

My words have been featured on Paste, Giant Bomb, The New Statesman, and on my own blog, ClockworkWorlds. The reception to this stuff has been great: I was even named "2014’s Blogger of the Year” by! My my writing examines the intersection between games, culture, politics, labour, race, and a ton of other things. I'm always trying to push my understanding of these complex issues further, and I like to bring my readers along with me while I do that through writing sizable, critical essays. I love this work, and I’d like to do even more of it.

Unfortunately, the sort of writing I do just doesn’t pay a living wage—not even close. In January 2015 (which was one of the most productive months for my writing ever), I only brought in 200 bucks. It’s sorta rough. Up until now, this hasn’t kept me from doing the sort of writing I love. That’s because, as a grad student, I’ve been able to supplement my freelance income through work as a teaching assistant. But in a couple of months, I’ll no longer be eligible for those teaching jobs (AND I’ll need to start paying full time tuition while I wrap up my dissertation.) And let’s not even get into my recent housing drama.

So, to let me do more writing, I am (finally) (humbly) coming to you. With your support, I plan on releasing one additional article per month on my blog, These will be the same size as the essays you’re familiar with, somewhere between 2,000-5,000 words. While most of these new articles will be about games in some manner or other, I’d like to leave the door open for other topics, too. And because I’ll be writing for you, I may also get to be a little more experimental in my writing.

So, for those of you unfamiliar with Patreon, here’s how this works:

1.You set up a Patreon account, if you don’t have one.

2.Determine how much you’re willing to pledge per month.

3.Read the (hopefully) rad stuff I write!

That’s it!

Thanks for checking my Patreon out, and I hope you'll consider offering me your support.

Q & A

Q: Hey, I'm actually not that familiar with your work. Is there a list of what you've written somewhere?
A: Check out these two posts on my blog. They list pretty much everything I've done over the last two years. There are a couple of little exceptions, but there's a lot there to work through, so it's a start!

Q: Austin, what will you be doing with this money?
A: I’ll be paying my rent, tuition, groceries, and probably buying a few games so I can write about them.

Q: Austin, does this mean you’re done being a freelancer?
A: No! I’ll still be writing for Paste (and pitching elsewhere). While being able to write specifically for you is great, writing for established sites offers me access to new readers. It’s a different audience, with somewhat different expectations, and I’m excited to write for both!

Q: So wait, are these new essays going to be Patron only or????
A: Nah. My plan is to release these as regular, readable-by-anyone blog posts. if I were just writing for the handful of folks who are already interested in what I say, then I'd pretty much be preaching to the choir, you know?

Q: Austin, I kinda hate your writing, but I do like your tweets/podcast/games/streaming. Will you still take my money?
A: Y-yes? Yes. Absolutely. This is not an official Patreon for Friends at the Table or for StreamFriends. But if I can have a little more stability, then contributing to those things will be a lot easier for me.

I’ll do a voice recording of my monthly article and put it out as a podcast, so that you can listen to me on your commute or whatevs.
