About A Year On Earth
I'll try my best to keep things brief (but probably won't). I'm 22 years old and currently live in Cape Town, South Africa. I started releasing music when I was 16 years old in the form of covers on YouTube whilst I was still in school. After 2 years of consistently releasing covers and building a fairly decent following, I realized that I had a huge passion for songwriting and that I needed to pursue it instead of singing versions of other people's music. My solution was to start a band. I did. The band is called Opposite The Other and since we launched back in 2016, we've been blessed in having some truly incredible things happen to us. We've released music that has played on radio, travelled around Europe playing shows, we've opened / shared stages with The Lumineers, Bastille, Calum Scott, The Cure and many other amazing artists. We're still going, but I realized that I needed another creative outlet as well and this led me to start a solo project called A Year On Earth, This project would focus on releasing music consistently and as frequently as possible (I try to release a song every month / 6 weeks and with your help through Patreon, hopefully this can increase). So why did I start a Patreon page? Let's move below:
Why I'm Here
After reading the above, you may think why on earth would a guy whose shared a stage with The Lumineers need support through Patreon? Well, firstly - this is a completely separate project. Secondly, things are never truly what they seem to be. The music industry is tough, and instead of selling my soul to a record label (which I've had the opportunity to do, but kindly rejected) I want to have control over my career and keep people who genuinely believe in me and support my music as central to my journey as possible. I write, record, produce and release all the music for the A Year On Earth project and this takes time and resources. I'd love for this to eventually become a sustainable project which allows me to focus my full energy on writing and recording more music for you whilst also being able to pay the bills - hence me reaching out via Patreon. I'm not here to get rich or famous, I simply want to create a community that supports the art I create and open up an avenue that could potentially lead to me making music my full-time "job". Your support means more than you could ever know, it's more than just supporting the art, it's contributing to my life and for that I am eternally grateful.
Where your money goes
I've touched on it above, but to summarize things: your money goes to funding the production and distribution of all music I make and release, equipment used to create the music and artwork / all relevant assets that go with the music. It also literally goes into my livelihood of paying rent and general living. Patreon will allow me to put my full focus onto music and making music sustainable.
I can't thank you enough for being a part of this journey.
